Redlight King wanted to sample Neil Young for their single "Old Man". Mr. Young's management said no but the man himself, upon hearing the song, said yes. Neil Young was quite right.
Redlight King have released an utterly amazing album that perfectly blends the worlds of rap, pop and rock into an effortlessly catchy, emotionally deep and expertly-crafted contender for album of the year. Sound-wise, I would say it's a combination of early Linkin Park's anthemic melodies and wall-of-distortion sounds and The Gaslight Anthem's down-and-out bluesy poetry and rough-edged vocals. All of the tracks are good, but particular stand-outs include the life-affirming Comeback, the summery single Old Man or the beefy riff-driven Bullet in My Hand. It's a great album from start to finish that begs to be listened to on a blisteringly hot day with plenty of chilled beer to hand. It is literally impossible to listen to this gem without nodding your head in time with the infectious, intelligent beats.
If there was justice in the music industry, this would sell millions of copies. All I can say is if you want a complex and intelligent pop album with fantastic melodies and plenty of emotional power, stop reading and buy "Something For the Pain" now.
