Much better than you might think!,
This review is from: The Discovery of France (Paperback)
This book looks and sounds like it may be a little dry for a casual reader interested in France and the French, but it really is easy to dip into and I found myself reading bits from every chapter out loud to my annoyed husband (which I thought people only did in reviews, never in real life)- it actually made me have to stop reading for laughing at the bits about maps travel on the road and canals in the past. It is quite academic, not chatty or touristy, but the writing is succinct and witty; if you are vaguely interested in why ordinary people and local administrators are like they are in France, and are interested in history, you must read this.
