This review is from: Clark: The Autobiography of Clark Terry (Hardcover)
This has been a long awaited autobiography, from one of Jazz's greatest players and real gentlemen. Few have given as much to the music as Clark has over a lifetime in the music.
The first three quarters of the book are the most interesting and informative and are an historically interesting inside view of the dreadful conditions so many poor black families endured, and if lucky, survived in the US from the mid twenties on; and the jazz music of the period and those that played it. There are lovely personal anecdotes about numerous jazz musicians and bandleaders, with whom Clark played. I would have awarded five stars were it not for the latter few sections of the book which are a little disappointing. However, it is still a most enjoyable tome and well worth reading.
