By far the best of Seton's historical novels that I've read and I've read most of them .....hauntingly bittersweet.I was fascinated to realise that Anya Seton must have visited my city of Limerick,Ireland (founded by the Vikings) which is mentioned in the novel. I instantly recognised the building which gave Anya Seton the idea of the large stone mansion at the confluence of the two rivers,Shannon and Abbey in which Merewyn was held captive. I live only a short distance from it.It is,in fact,our courthouse a beautiful old iconic building.I pass it every day and on many an occasion I've often seen Rumon's boat, in my minds eye, sail towards that building to rescue Merewyn and finally find his Avalon but...
