This is a guide book like no other that I've read.Basically it's a book of lists - where is the best place to have a coffee, buy deli specialities, find home produce, soak up some local culture, listen to live music? If you are the type of person who likes to plan an itinerary in detail, this book is a real boon - clear concise directions on how to reach each destination, though maps are a bit sparse. Maps though, are what typical guide books have and this isn't a typical guide book - it packs in the information instead. If you are Scottish, you'll know of this book - it is almost a national institution. Someone moving to Glasgow or Edinburgh would find this an absolutely first class way to finding the best of what the city has to offer them. It's not a book to put in your pocket as you go sightseeing on a day trip, but it is the book to look at when planning a longer visit, particularly if you go self-catering somewhere near the big cities. Wish I'd had this twenty-five years ago, when I did this regularly. |
