Another HBO classic,
This review is from: Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee (HBO) [DVD] (DVD)
This marvellous HBO feature has sneaked out onto R2 DVD almost unnoticed. This is a pity because it is a quite excellent film which depicts the tragic treatment of the native Indian Americans forced onto reservations in the 1870's. As such the overall story told is not dissimilar to that depicted in the equally engaging `Geronimo - An American Legend'. Eagle eyed viewers will spot the star of that film (Wes Studi) in a bit part in this feature, which centres on three main characters: a Senator trying to do his best for the Indians under the circumstances, a young native he has taken under his wing and who later returns as a Doctor to witness the reservation debacle for himself, and Sitting Bull - the last of the great native indian chiefs to surrender. The acting is first class throughout, particularly from the three lead actors. The widescreen transfer and sound are excellent and the film also has an endearing, atmospheric soundtrack. A must have for any fan of the western genre and particularly for lovers of those features which contain more fact than fiction. Extras are sparse but include two commentaries. Recommended viewing.
