Gripping and beautiful,
This review is from: Under the Sun (Kindle Edition)
I wasn't expecting to learn about Second World War Spitfires and the art of haiku and Christian martyrs in Japan when I sat down to read this slim, lovely novel. But I did. It's the story of a downed British pilot, Edward Strickland, who ends up the captive of a Japanese officer, Captain Hayama, on a deserted island during the war. On one level, Under the Sun is a terrifically taut novel about the unfolding relationship between these two men, but on another it's a beautiful and thoughtful meditation on friendship and duty. Highly recommended.
