Superb Edition of Clarke's work,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales (Hardcover)
Great care has been taken in this production to reproduce the illustrations as closely as possible to the original artwork; "The new photography carried out by the Gallery* on all 11 illustrations [in their collection] reproduced here in this book, give a clear picture of the strikingly vivid colours Clarke appled nearly one hundred years ago." This passage can be found in the Introduction and it refers to the eleven illustrations by Harry Clarke in the possession of the *National Gallery of Ireland, in Dublin. And such words are like music to the ears of Harry Clarke's admirers of his wonderful and majestic masterpieces. The black and white drawings are also reproduced carefully and glow with a clarity on rich paper that makes them as stunning as they are in the orginal.
The publishers, Gill and MacMillan have also taken care that the text is up to date for new generations of Hans Christian Andersen and Harry Clarke admirers. As an adult, I prefer the orignal text, but then I bought the book for myself, mainly for the illustrations. If I had bought it for a child then perhaps I would prefer the text they have used, it is stll most enjoyable. This book deserves the full five stars as a result. It is perfect for people of all ages and more especially for the many lovers of Clarke's work. Many thanks to the publishers for this excellent edition!
