3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 24 Jun. 2009

This review is from: The Angel's Game (Hardcover)
I loved Shadow of the Wind and wondered if The Angel's Game could live up top it - it didn't. The writing style is flawless as are the descriptions of old Barcelona and for about three-quarters of the book I was hooked. The last quarter stretched my credulity to breaking point with the main character brushing off numerous attempts on his life by armed and very tough police officers, leaving a higher body count than a Dirty Harry movie as the story degenerated into a series of chases and killings. I found the resolution clumsy and it did not explain the various mysteries which had been so beautifully set up earlier in the story.

I completely agree with your analysis - yet would only give the book 2 stars. I find the author very overrated. Yes, he writes beautifully but both books of his leave you with too many unanswered questions.

In general, I agree with these comments. I enjoyed both books but the last part of Angel's Game made me want to tell Carlos he had failed to bring the story to any kind of satisfactory conclusion. A little self-discipline might have benefited author and reader. Great invention and atmosphere - but it doesn't really add up to much, especially in view of the weak ending.

Very fair comment, I was immensely disappointed in this novel, which slipped into gothic horror mode so easily. I would have preferred a rational explanation and realistic ending.

I agree with this for the most part; I was left with a lot of unanswered questions that I'd been really looking forward to seeing resolved in the ending. The end itself was pretty confusing, although I think the idea was for a mysterious ending - it's sort of left to the reader to decide for themselves on the mental state of David.

I totally agree! What a disappointment! I had been waiting so eagerly for the follow up to SHadow of the Wind (which I would highly recomment) but Angels game was a sad disappointment. What an unsatisfactory ending...it could have been so good!

Yes I agree I loved Shadow of the wind and recommended it to many friends but the angels game was a bit ridiculous!

Completely agree - was disappointed in this book which was muddled and confusing. Rather self indulgent, I thought - much prefered his Shadow of the Wind

I couldn't wait for this book to be published, I to loved Shadow of the Wind and reccomended it to everyone.Angels Games however was I am sorry to say very disapointing, although the descriptions of Barcelona were again haunting the plot was rather thin.

thank goodness it is not just me, I read the first 200 pages avidly, the next 50 not quite so, and gave up with a hundred pages to go, I don't normally read 300 pages and give up, but it just was not interesting me anymore, and I felt that the resoultion would be a let down, which it seems it was in the end, glad I did not waste anymore time

I tend to agree it's as if the author has run out of steam. More worrying is that his next offerings are reworked books previously written for teenagers.
