I'll be honest and say I'm struggling to decide how to rate this book. Have I enjoyed it? Yes, in parts, and overall in the main. It's well written, amusing, filled with compassion and insight. It's a very clever book. The language, the concept, the denouement and trickery.
I was hooked into the story and characters very quickly. I carefully avoided reviews which might have spoilers; this is a book you definitely need to enter 'cold' to fully appreciate the reveal around 70pp in. Rosemary, the central character in the family, has a life filled with questions. The answers are elusive but realisation and truth eventually come, at a price. My difficulty lies with the discomfort I felt as I read parts of the story. It's disturbing, challenging and raises ethical issues of which I've long been aware but have, perhaps, chosen to ignore. So it's a personal discomfort and on balance, it's right that a reader should be challenged. The story is powerful at an emotional and moral level and for those reasons alone, I'm going for 5 stars.
I hope you can tackle this book with an open mind; it's a powerful tale with a sting.
