'Superstar In The Making',
This review is from: I Will Build You a House (MP3 Download)
I have always rated Goldie Reed and this E.P. has done nothing to make me change my mind about her. Following on from the promising 'Goldie Reed' album, 'I Will Build You A House', while an E.P. of many different shades and textures, stylistically is very much in the same vein as that first album.
Goldie quite simply has a voice to die for. Think Ambrosia Parsley of Shivaree mixed with Eva Cassidy and you are not far off. The fact that there is always something reassuringly old fashioned, natural and dreamy about the way Goldie projects her image to the world also gives her a kind of Marilyn Monroe mystique which I for one find intoxicating in todays world of 'Twerking' and most talented female artists tendency these days to think they have to appear on stage virtually naked to sell a good record. All of these factors make Goldie Reed stand out from the crowd meaning that the only missing ingredient on the road to superstardom is THAT classic song.
Musically the pot bubbles up a combination of country & bluegrass melodies (with the odd tinge of blues, rock, folk and pop) thrown in. Reed is not quite as experimental as Shivaree nor as commercial as Eva Cassidy but that's not a bad thing because it means that Goldie Reed only sounds like herself and you can't say that about a lot of popular artists these days, can you?
The producer in me can hear lots of other elements that could have been added to these songs to make them more radio friendly but the more I have played this E.P. the more I have become to see it as all the better for not sounding overly polished as the songs as are give Goldies voice the perfect platform to take centre stage..
All in all, you need to investigate Goldie Reed and this E.P. is as good a place to start as any.
