This review is from: The Snow Queen [DVD] (DVD)
This adaptation of the Snow Queen story was recently shown on CBBC, and was one of the most magical programmes that I have seen in a long time. The action was shot in sepia like colours, with the movement of the characters having an 'old movie' feel to them. These were superimposed in places onto animated or picture backgrounds. I'm not exactly sure of the technical details of how this was put together, but it gave the whole thing an arty, but otherworldly feel.
The story was told with very little actual dialogue - it was mostly actions with odd sentences, interspersed with sung parts. This may sound as though it could be dull, but both myself and my three year old son were captivated by it. I am now buying a copy as I can't stand having the CBBC logo twinkling in the corner of the screen every 2 seconds on the copy I recorded!
This whole thing made quite a refreshing change from the brightly coloured, action packed childrens stories normally shown. It worked very well with the story, which itself is quite a stark tale.
