Did Not Do Matt Smith Justice At All,
This review is from: Doctor Who - The Time of the Doctor & Other Eleventh Doctor Christmas Specials [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This episode is just a complete mess and really doesn't do Matt Smith justice at all.
The set up of all the deadliest species in the universe gathered together is just a rehash of "The Pandorica Opens", and the inclusion of the Cybermen and Weeping angels is near pointless - much like Clara's family, who do nothing for the plot other than provide padding because there is so little actual story here.
The nude gags are completely unnecessary, and Tasha Lem is just a typical textbook Moffat female character - feisty and flirty.
The 13-regenerations-only problem is resolved in this episode too, and I can't help but feel a little bit disappointed.
The build-up to the regeneration is slightly overdone, with a much unneeded cameo, but Matt Smith is perfect here. This is arguably the stand out moment of the episode, though the regeneration itself is over within the blink of an eye, so there wasn't really any build up of emotion.
the last scene focuses more on Clara's reaction than the fact that we have a new Doctor, which is disappointing as we won't see the new Doctor until August 2014.
I'm honestly worried for series 8 now. Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, but I have a nasty feeling Moffat's writing is going to dumb him down. I really hope I'm wrong

Excellent review, I must say. Indeed I agree that I am now worried too about the coming episodes. I was shocked about the regeneration. It was the most disappointed moment ever made in this series. A disgrace to all the former efforts to make a regeneration a moment to remember for the fans Worldwide. And surely not a well made present to the outstanding Matt Smit, who deserved a better last moment to say farewell. I also agree with all the other remarks you've made in your review. They should have named this Christmas Special: 'The greatest disappointment ever".
