I have seen a preview copy of The Allotment & Garden Guide - A monthly guide to better wartime gardening by Twigs Way (isbn 9780955272356). Its not actually out till 1st December but looks like a really good book. Certainly worth considering as an alternative and has some great hints and tips despite being retro.

Have you read Ken Follett's World Without End? It's brilliants as is Pillars of the Earth. Can't wait for the tv series.
