I'm not going to comment on the music as such - readers likely know what this is, and why it's so interesting. Early Philip Glass works are indeed pretty close to what we have here, except the Riley pieces have more vitality, taking repetitive passages and infusing them with infinite variety. There's a liveliness here you don't normally associate with the category.

I bought this reissue because the label, Cherry Red/Reactive have been doing an phenomenal job reissuing titles from the Tangerine Dream catalog (come on Virgin, give it up and let Cherry Red have access to your catalog!)

As such this remastered edition sounds terrific, the music sounds pure, vibrant, and alive. The booklet folds out (think of a front cover as one panel - the fully unfurled booklet is eight panels in size, if that makes sense). The unfolded booklet contains a new, and lengthy article written by Sid Smith. It's a decent read too, and includes a reproduction of the original French release.

All in all this is excellent - some might be bothered by the relatively short playing time (approx. 40 minutes total), but that's being a bit churlish when the music is this good. As reissues go, this is great. I bought the reissue of In C at the same time, well done Cherry Red!

Its taken a long time for a Re-Mastered copy with art work that does it justice.Side 1 is Terry at his Keyboard with looped and delayed revox tape recorders reminscent of his all night live performances.Side 2 he switches to Soprano sax also using tape delay and looping. Its magical. My first copy was bought in 1969 on CBS Masterworks and It still remains in my top 20 of all time classics.Just put it on and chill and if you enjoy this treat yourself to "Persian Surgery Dervishes" Absolutely essential music

Name-checked by serious luminaries like Pete Townshend of The Who and Mike Oldfield as influences on both "Who's Next" and "Tubular Bells" – and with the British Prog Rock Band pinching CURVED AIR as their name – Californian Terry Riley’s 1969 LP on Columbia Masterworks "A Rainbow In Curved Air" has had extraordinary influence across the decades. Everyone from Tangerine Dream, Amon Duul, Can, Neu and Soft Machine - right on through to Steve Reich, Orbital and Boards Of Canada cite the man’s repetitive Electronic noodlings as seminal in the development of their sound. In fact you could say that 'all' Minimal, Ambient and Electronica music owes a debt and a nod to Terry Riley’s groundbreaking LPs. And this beautifully remastered CD (BEN WISEMAN has handled the original master tapes) digs out all those nuances and layers and keyboard flourishes as never before. Here are the Switched On Bach details...

UK released April 2012 – "A Rainbow In Curved Air" by TERRY RILEY on Esoteric Recordings ECLEC 2306 (Barcode 5013929430648) is a straightforward CD remaster (40:27 minutes) of his 2nd LP first issued late 1969 in the USA on Columbia Masterworks MS 7315 and belatedly released 1971 in the UK on CBS Records S 64564. Side 1 is called "A Rainbow In Curved Air" and is one continuous piece of Electronic Music at 18:47 minutes - while Side 2 is "Poppy Nogood And The Phantom Band" running to 21:41 minutes. Produced by DAVID BEHRMAN – the album was originally Engineered by GLEN KOLOTKIN and ROY SEGAL (his 1st album for Columbia Masterworks is "in C" from 1968 on MS 7178 – which Esoteric Recordings have also reissued on remastered CD - ECLEC 2305 in 2012).

I owned this on LP years ago. What on earth happened to it? Half-inched or borrowed no doubt. I just happened to see this newly polished remastered edition and can happily report that it retains its power to delight. This came out originally in 1969!! It sounds great today; imagine what it would have sounded like then. Brilliant.

Having had the original LP recording this is a great replacement and would like the original 'In C' to be re-released
