5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent short history book.
As good a short history book and introduction to Pearl Harbor as I've read. Although it's difficut to say anything new, Freeman always says things well. His judgement is sound and being English perhaps helps him maintain a greater objectivity. 3.0 out of 5 stars Bit sketchy.
Well Written, very concise, if anything a little too concise. Little in depth analysis. Just thumbnail reporting of the events

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent short history book., 3 Jan. 2013
As good a short history book and introduction to Pearl Harbor as I've read. Although it's difficut to say anything new, Freeman always says things well. His judgement is sound and being English perhaps helps him maintain a greater objectivity. In many ways Pearl Harbor is a catalogue of failures, both in regards to intelligence and also in military execution. There were mistakes on both sides, but ultimately Pearl Harbor was a blunder by Japan, as well as being a tragedy for the US. Book is also good on significance and legacy of battle. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and concise account., 28 Dec. 2012
Comprehensive account of Pearl Harbor, dealing with the errors on both sides (errors in intelligence, strategy and tactics). Book neatly covers the build-up to the battle and also addresses its legacy. Freeman is methodical in dealing with the facts, commanders and statistics of Pearl Harbor, but he also writes with sympathy about the heroism and victims too. The book, longer than an essay but not as long as some of the tomes you see on the subject, is accessible and most readers should draw something new from both the account and also the author's conclusions.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best short history books on kindle I've ever read., 13 Jan. 2013
Richard Freeman has written a fluid and effective account of Pearl Harbor which has a surprising amount of detail and argument a short book. Although the bulk of the book is concerned with the actual attack he draws in perspectives from intelligence agents, diplomats, civilians and politicians to give a fuller picture of things. Although Pearl Harbor is the story of Japan waking up the sleeping giant of America, Freeman rightly points out just how blind some of the base's commanders were to the threat of attack. One of the best short History books on kindle I've ever read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A factual but nontheless really enjoyable exposition on an important topic in WW2 history, 18 Feb. 2014

I found this book gave me a factual insight into the attack on Pearl Harbour. It was easily readable and enjoyable but fact based. Probably not for the serious scholar but an excellent reference book for those who want a something factual but not too "heavy"

Having seen the film of Pearl Harbour decided I would like to have a more "in depth" version of the this dreadful day. Hinge of war certainly fulfills all one would like to know about it. Found it most interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Concise and informative, 16 Mar. 2013
The attack on Pearl Harbor is a well-known and important 20th century historical event. However, less people know about the surrounding circumstances that led to it. As someone who knew a few details about the attack itself, but not much else, I found this ebook very informative. I liked Freeman's practical approach and concise layout of the book. It has a strong analysis as well as being a 'who', 'when' and 'why' account. There were so many repercussions for a 90 minute attack, it's an iconic event and one that should be read about by anyone interested in modern history. A good place to start for those embarking on study of the US involvement in WWII.

This review is from: Pearl Harbor: Hinge of War (Kindle Edition)
As others have said - this is a concise & slightly dry summary of the events of 7 December 1941. It could be easily be used as a companion to the excellent 'Tora! Tora! Tora! film of the Pearl Harbour attack.
