5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional and Poignant Novel About Unexpected Love, 26 Aug 2014
This review is from: It's You (Kindle Edition)
“It’s You” is a thoughtful, often poignant novel about unexpected love and the havoc it wreaks on one man’s emotional, personal, and work life.

David, a teacher, is engaged to a woman named Clare and expects eventually (and reluctantly) to take over her family business. His life seems on track until one of his students, Mark, expresses a crush on him—and David realizes that he reciprocates the feeling. What follows is David’s descent into crisis, as he begins to explore and accept his attraction to Mark. The relationship that ensues takes him not only an internal journey, but an international one as well in his search for love and happiness.

The strength of “It’s You” lies in the characterization of David—his realization that he loves Mark and the subsequent mental struggle he goes through is well-written and resonant; you feel both his joy and his pain throughout the course of the story. The struggle also adds tension and suspense to the novel—as a reader, you are caught up in his worry about who to tell, how much to reveal, the uncertainty over the age difference, and what the effects will be on his friendships and engagement. I thought the author did a good job of adding complexity to the novel through the consequences of David’s actions on others in his life (including Mark). I will say I was also interested in the character of Clare and would have liked more of her perspective—there are hints that their relationship is not all bliss, and I did wonder about how she at first perceived the shifts in their relationship.

While this is a novel about love between two men, it’s not terribly explicit. Recommended to readers who like character-driven novels about personal journeys, especially when those journeys involve romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars The main character David is built up believably into someone who deludes himself into thinking he will escape from this love aff, 12 Aug 2014

This is a well-observed tale that makes you want to read on. The main character David is built up believably into someone who deludes himself into thinking he will escape from this love affair with a boy at his school where he teaches. He organises his life minutely thinking that no-one else suspects anything but finds out that nearly everyone knows, except in fact the one person who he had intended to share his life with. He finds that such an affair is not easy to disguise and in fact key characters, unbeknown to him, are actually colluding in the affair continuing. As his life unravels, the description of how he reaches the bottom of the wheel is movingly and agonisingly described. In fact, throughout the book, the descriptions of the reactions between characters and how the smallest gestures count are convincingly portrayed. And the scenario is perfectly credible: if in real life (as happened a couple of years ago), you can have a teacher who seemed to think he could go off to France with one of his 15 year old pupils and live happily ever after, then this man becoming infatuated with one of his pupils is quite possible. Definitely should be read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching Story, 24 Aug 2014
This review is from: It's You (Kindle Edition)
This is a passionate story and I was moved by it. David is engaged to be married and knowing he loves someone else, Mark. He tries to convince himself he doesn't but it isn't working. He walks through his days in a state of loss, not sure what to do. The battle of facing your heart, and who you are in love with is hard enough and even more of a struggle when it ends up being a gay love. But love is love, no matter who we are. The heart knows what and whom it wants. This book is filled with the intense fight of inner demons. Trying to do what is expected from the world, but is the love strong enough to win? There is denial, confusion and fear. It held me from the start. The characters are wonderful and the passion and bond are strong. Very well defined and work well together for this story. It is well written and done in a very classy way. It is a heart wrenching and beautiful tale and I enjoyed it very much. The author touches on a subject so many are still against but we only find true love if we let it be found. I would love to see more of this work. The compassion shown for mankind is endearing. I highly recommend this book, it is a sweet read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!, 3 Sep 2014
This review is from: It's You (Kindle Edition)
I enjoyed It's You by D. Bunyan. This story is unlike anything that I have ever read before. When I first started reading the book, it seemed like it had a standard romance plot with David engaged to be married to Clare. They seemed pretty happy and in love, so the reader figures it will all be smooth sailing from then on out. However, David is a teacher and a student named Mark comes into his life. Mark falls hard for David and David starts to realize that he has feelings for Mark as well. As the reader, we can feel the tension and pain that David is going through. He's about to get married to Clare and he doesn't want to hurt her. It seems like Clare feels like there is something missing from the relationship as well. David is also worried about the age difference between him and Mark. But David knows deep in his heart that this is the right decision for him to make.

Even though this story was about love between two men, I didn't feel like the book was too graphic. I also felt like it was a wonderful tale that encourages people to be who they really are. I loved the message in this story and I would highly recommend it.

This book is simply one of the best books i've ever read. I stayed up until the early hours reading it all, it was so good and even then it made such an impression on me, when I finally fell asleep, I actually dreamt about it. I didn't know what to expect really when purchasing it (free too I might add), but it was definitely an emotional rollercoaster this one. The subject matter is a tough one and one that not many people want to approach, so kudos to this amazing author who delved into this topic and the fallout from it with such sensitivity. This book wasn't just a romance, but a tale of a mans life being completely upended until he inevitably unravels and falls apart. Its very hard to read and is heartbreaking at times. The peripheral characters were also much needed here to as they were integral to both of these mens story, which spans over 4 years I think it is. If you are looking for your typical romance with sex and a HEA, then you won't find it here and It really is a kind of draw your own conclusions with regards to the ending. I will read this many times and I absolutely cannot recommend it enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected turns all the way, 11 Aug 2014
This review is from: It's You (Kindle Edition)
I enjoyed this book. At first I thought it would be a fairly standard formula, but the various unexpected twists and turns kept me wanting to find out how it would all pan out in the end for Dave. The writing is well paced and there's enough tension to keep you turning the pages. Will look out for more books from this author.
