5.0 out of 5 stars Feisty characters who create havoc
Pinstripes is a very funny story of revenge in the city. It has a serious side, and at times I felt so sorry for the main characters who had monumental problems to deal with, not least the fact they were sacked unjustly. The way they join together to get revenge gives everyone hope. It was impossible to put this book down, and when I finished it I really missed it.

The basic plot to this book is good, it owes more than a nod to The First Wives Club, but then even Shakespeare got his inspiration off other stories, so Faith Bleasdale is in good company and i can see why it might make a decent film. 2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 11 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Pinstripes (Paperback)
The basic plot to this book is good, it owes more than a nod to The First Wives Club, but then even Shakespeare got his inspiration off other stories, so Faith Bleasdale is in good company and i can see why it might make a decent film. Sadly it doesn't make a good book. To start with the lead up to what we're all interested in - when the girls get sacked and what they do about it takes far too long, 152 pages to be precise until we even get to the morning of the day they're dismissed, 178 pages until they decide on revenge. There's far too much back story in these early pages too, a lot of it repeated later, and why wasn't Ella's story in particular kept until later for a bit of suspense? The descriptions of Clara's cocaine taking are really overdone, we do not need to be told every time she has a line of coke or visits a dealer to realise that's she's got a problem. The baddies are cliched, they're all unpleasant charecters, bad in bed, unpopular, they're all even physically unattractive, flat chested, small, spotty etc - doesn't Faith Bleasedale realise that a person can be charming on the surface and rotton underneath, and would also be a lot more interesting to read about? (Incidentally how can you 'arrogantly' ask a maitre'd to show you to a table like Isabelle does? Rudely maybe, abruptly, but it isn't an arrogant request.) And the dialogue - it's inept in places and downright unbelievable in others. Isabelle is the head of sales in an investment bank - are we seriously expected to believe that she needs to be told that acting on insider information is illegal? Or that a corporate lawyer might have access to to that information? Letting the ignorant reader know things in this clumsy way is one of the first things you are taught not to do in writing classes. The shame is that if this book had been properly revised, tidied up and the worst of the cliches taken out, as is generally done in the second draft of a book it might have been quite good. As it is it's just tedious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fab a genuine must read, 19 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Pinstripes (Paperback)
have never actually read a book that i was unable to put down but i read this book literally in one sitting unable to even stop for a coffee...I work in the city and found it amazingly real but with some of wiitiest moments of even the greatest episodes of ab fad amazing characters of emmense depth the writer truly has genies on her side when it comes to actually getting somones personality down on paper (I am going out to buy the 1st book Rubber Gloves or Jimmy Choos's now because if its only 10% as good as this it will be a great read) I am so pleased there is some life left in young female British writers I have even e-mailed the writer herself (would not usally do this but it is that good i just had too there is an email & website address on the back of book) & amazingly she mailed an obviously written for me (not the standard pre programmed reply) e-mail...so not only talent a great girl as well I cannot wait for the third book
thanks again for a great book
