Brill & Broadway, 75 Hits from The Original Home of Songwriting. NOT3CD167.

This is a pulling together of recordings attributed to composers whose place of work was The Brill Building on Broadway.

Hear 75 examples of the music being composed from the middle to late 1950s through to 1962 as this collection is made up of all public domain recordings.

If you check on the existing composer sets issued by Not Now Music you will find extensive evidence if the musical worth of those whose works make up the 75 tracks. Many of the songs and individual recordings are now in the legendary category and are instantly recognisable.

Of the vast array I do have my favourites..."It Might as well Rain Until September" by Carole King was used as pre show music for the tour of "Summer Holiday" back in the 1990s and I must have heard it at 25 or more shows.

"Halfway to Paradise" will always be associated with Billy Fury and it was the song that when he resumed performing in the 1980s all the audience wanted him to sing at least once and frequently more. I do rate Tony Orlando but I do not think his version has the same moody impact that Billy created on record.

Jess Conrad is still performing and I have seen him on stage. He has charisma and that makes up for his light singing ability and "Rag Doll" from his movie of the same name is probably his best record of that time.

Mark Wynter another 1960s pop star has a successful stage career going back to the 1960s and having seen him many times he is clearly a talented actor and singer. He was superb in South Pacific as Emile and handled the vocals and acting with credit. His recording of "Go Away Little Girl" was very successful and it is a standout composition.

Billy Fury does sing "I'd Never Find Another You" and again it is his rock n roll balladeering that won over the mums and dads of the 1960s in the same way that Cliff did.

The Drifters had a big hit with "Save the Last Dance for Me" and it is this which closes the compilation as song 75.

Informative liner notes by Michael Heatley and excellent sound transfers make this a most welcome compilation of music of an era. There are photographic images of Gerry Goffin & Carole King; Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield; Barry Mann& Cynthia Weil; Jerry Leiber; Elvis & Mike Stoller. Jeff Barry; Ellie Greenwich; Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman; Don Kirshner. Composer credits and years of recording are quoted.

CD1 runs for 59.10; CD2 runs for 59.47 & CD3 runs for 60.41.

A great compilation at a great price. The was a lot of Gems that were already known to me , but there was also loads of Gems that I had never heard before. 75 Tracks over 3 CD's , fabulous value. You couldn't even work out how much these items would cost you if you tried to track them down on vinyl. That is , if you can still find the more obscure stuff. Well worth it.
