4.0 out of 5 stars A Return to Proper Techno
At some point, it was inevitable that Fabric would hand over to Dettmann to piece together a mix in their series, as a regular returner to the club's books on Saturday nights.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Return to Proper Techno, 14 Sep 2014
This review is from: Fabric 77: Mixed By Marcel Dettmann (Audio CD)
At some point, it was inevitable that Fabric would hand over to Dettmann to piece together a mix in their series, as a regular returner to the club's books on Saturday nights.

It's come at a good time, with with a few too many disappointing releases from the series failing to provide the oomph or depth that really needs to drive a Fabric mix. The problem has been the long spells of bland tech-house records, which carry neither the soul of house or mood of techno. Tech-house is fine to start a set and build from, but if you stay there throughout the mix, unless its an outstanding selection, the sets too often fail to captivate.

Dettmann is a proper Techno DJ. His sound is solid, yet at the same time deep and stirring. The set begins with a dramatic build, reaching its first beat 3 minutes in, and carries the mood onwards strongly. With plenty of drive pulsating from the tunes on show, Dettmann doesn't try to squeeze a silly number of tracks in and risk losing the coherence of the set. It's well paced, well ordered, and offers a very welcome return to full blown, main stage, all guns blazing techno. It's certainly the most engaging Fabric mix for a fair while, and with Raresh up next, I hope this will begin a strong run again in the series. Recommended.
