4.0 out of 5 stars Daft and amusing
Carolyn Wells wrote around 170 books, and this megapack is just a representative sample. Her most famous detective was Pennington Wise (and his gifted and enigmatic assistant, Zizi) and another was Fleming Stone. These early super-detectives succeed where the police have completely failed, often solving locked-room mysteries. The stories have a strong flavour of life...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok without being great.
You might enjoy this if you like detective fiction written in the late Victorian/Edwardian period although it's pretty lightweight. I've read a half dozen stories so far and they're OK without being great. Apparently the author began her career writing children's books and I think this is reflected in her style. The stories I've read so far all feature her detective...

The stories have a strong flavour of life (mostly in New York) in the nineteen tens and twenties - lively, flippant, pleasure-seeking, with extremes of wealth and poverty. The language is full of dated slang and the sophistication seems pretty quaint today. The stories move at a good pace and are quite well-constructed. They are reasonably entertaining, but I got mental indigestion after reading two. In 1913, Wells wrote a book called 'The Technique of the Mystery Story'; using this method of writing made her books all pretty much the same, though they were very successful during her lifetime. They are not great literature - in fact, they are repetitive, clichéd and sometimes (unintentionally) hilariously daft - but they are fun and they have quite an important place in the history of the detective novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading, 15 Nov. 2014

It is necessary to remember, whilst reading these stories, the era they were written. With that in mind the plots are well thought out and keeps the reader guessing right up to the end. I have downloaded the second Carolyn Wells Megapack and hope it will be just as enthralling.

You might enjoy this if you like detective fiction written in the late Victorian/Edwardian period although it's pretty lightweight. I've read a half dozen stories so far and they're OK without being great. Apparently the author began her career writing children's books and I think this is reflected in her style. The stories I've read so far all feature her detective Pennington ("Penny") Wise and his assistant Zizi, although feature is probably the wrong word to use given that they don't usually appear at all until quite late in each story. Most of the stories in this collection feature a different detective - perhaps they are better. We shall see. Anyway, at 37p for the whole lot you're not taking a big risk!
