5.0 out of 5 stars Unputtadownable!
Micks description of the thought process of a junkie is an education. It should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants insight into how smack takes over and annihilates any other mental processes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Searingly honest....
This book is as far away from being an attempt to glamourise hard drugs as you could possibly get! Sags a bit in the middle but maybe that's because I was less interested in the cast of characters in his life at that time. Hadn't expected to come away with a strange fondness for Ozzy Osbourne!

Wall is rightly revered as one of contemporary music's most authoritative commentators but here's a side of his work that all too rarely sees the light of day.

One of my all time favourite books, Paranoid is, by turns, heartbreaking, hilarious, disgusting and inspiring.
Readers desperate for a pigeon-hole might think of Ken't 'Apathy for The Devil' and the work of the late, great Hunter S Thompson. That would be an error, however. Kent, you feel, while probably not faking it, nevertheless fails to bring the sheer energy, feel and power to his work in the same way Mick does. This really is outstanding writing.

Like all the best writers, Mick is concerned only with the story, the whole story and nothing but the story. If that means he casts himself in a dreadful light, then so be it. Brutally honest, unflinching and never less than absolutely compelling, Paranoid is the finest work of its kind yet written.

In this unexpurgated release, we finally get to read those parts that had the book's original publisher blanching in horror and reaching for the garden shears.

The real deal, then. Exactly as the man intended. And as a result, even better, even more powerful and even more essential than its worthy predecessor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern cult classic, 24 Jun. 2014

This review is from: Paranoid: Black Days with Sabbath & Other Horror Stories - The Unexpurgated Edition (Kindle Edition)
The title of this book IS misleading – while Ozzy and co are in it, along with a load of other rock luminaries, they are supporting characters in the story of Mick Wall’s life as a rock writer, occasional PR and eventual TV star from the late 70’s to the 90’s; a story as much about those wild, sick times as it is about Mick. It takes in class, fear, failure, success (though it’s hard to tell which is worse) loneliness, addiction, world class blagging, humiliating jobs and excruciating sex. It’s a genuine roller coaster: laugh out loud funny, repellant and moving in turn, though Wall never remotely tries for sympathy or forgiveness - from his reader or from himself. Above all, it’s brutally honest and authentic, like listening to someone’s private thoughts spoken out loud, and one of the most un-putdownable books I’ve read for years. Wall is a brilliant writer and a natural storyteller, who has never lost his outsider status, his chancer’s eye or his inability to fake it, even when he wants to. A modern cult classic.

Always funny to read about the antics of 80s rock stars and their overblown egos. Feels a bit like 2 books, first half heroin the second half LA big hair rock. Well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could NOT stop reading, 24 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Paranoid: Black Days with Sabbath & Other Horror Stories - The Unexpurgated Edition (Kindle Edition)
My boyfriend had a copy of this years ago and I read it then when there was nothing else to reda in the flat. I thought it was probably about Black Sabbath - well, duh! Instead it was one of the best books I'd ever read. I used to reread it every year or so. Then I split from my boyufriend and with him went the book. DSo when I saw this I thought £2.49 - fantastic. I hadn't realsied it was the writers unexpurgated version, meaning its twice as good. Amazing amazing book. Never been aniother rock book like it.
