Disappointing new rockabilly album from Brian Setzer.

I was so looking forward to this, after having got tired of "live" albums and feeling that he has exhausted the Orchestra format.

On a positive note, guitar playing (obviously), general musicanship and productions standards are high. Some great piano pounding as other reviews have...

Rockabilly has been around for so many years now but what separates Setzer's vision of the genre from the rest is his unique style which introduces elements of swing and rhythm and blues into the mix. After more than 28 years and 20 albums into a solo career the former Stray Cats frontman continues to enthrall and excite with twelve hook laden songs that are further distinguished by a deft lyrical touch. There is the black humour of "What's Her Name" and "Calamity Jane"; the yearning "Blue Lights, Big City"; the regretful "The Girl With The Blues In Her Eyes "; and the whimsy of "Should'a Got A V8".

If there is a better rock 'n' roll guitarist than Setzer around then I'd sure like to hear about it. He's already won two Grammy awards for best pop instrumentals ("Caravan" and Sleepwalk") and with this album he sets fresh benchmarks. His band turn in ace performances including some riveting keyboards from Kevin McKendree and the production is underpinned by some solid bass and drums which really gets things rocking.

What is remarkable is that Setzer continues to bring a fresh and dynamic sound to a musical style that has endured for 60 years and shows no sign of fading away.

Disappointing new rockabilly album from Brian Setzer.

I was so looking forward to this, after having got tired of "live" albums and feeling that he has exhausted the Orchestra format.

On a positive note, guitar playing (obviously), general musicanship and productions standards are high. Some great piano pounding as other reviews have noticed.

Sadly though, there is very little original here. "What's her name" is a blatant rewrite of Tommy Sand's "Worrying Kind". Some of the guitar riffs are lifted from other well known rocking tunes - although admittedly Setzer does then take them to other places. "Rockabilly blues" sounds like "Please don't touch" when it starts, sounds like the Cats' "Lust n love" gets a nod elsewhere on the album.

"Lets shake" is a party rock n roll song, aimed at radio play, namechecking several other classics of the genre. Nothing wrong with that as such, but it does set the tone for the whole album - it is like Setzer has written an introductory primer for those seeking an introduction to the rock n roll scene.

Best songs? Probably "Lets shake", "Rockabilly blues", "Nothing's a sure thing", "Stiletto cool" and "I should've got a V8".

It's not bad, has been on repeat in the car since release, but could have been so much better

5.0 out of 5 stars buy this album., 28 Oct 2014
This review is from: Brian Setzer: Rockabilly Riot! All Original (Audio CD)
i am glade he has gone back to his roots.

don't get me wrong, i still like his big band stuff.

it's just takes me back to my youth when, rock-a-billy was king.

i grew up in the 50s when this type of music was new, along with rock-an-roll.
when it was reguarded as devil music.

i remember when the stray cats first made appearance, and their manager was
another rock-a-billy ledgend dave edmunds. actually it was through their manager
that i was introduced to the stray cats.

i'm drifting off the subject. buy this album, you won't be disappointed.
