5.0 out of 5 stars An impressive human document
'14 Diaries of the Great War' offers what its title promises: the account of ordinary people's adventures during the 1914-1918 war. Brought to you in a realistic way, well acted + lavishly merged with original footage from those terrible years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting series
However, it leaves an impression of being historically inaccurate in several respects and very hollow and lacking, especially in the area of bringing anything (relevant, old or new) about the Sarajevo assassination and the nature and history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire rule. '14 Diaries of the Great War' offers what its title promises: the account of ordinary people's adventures during the 1914-1918 war. Brought to you in a realistic way, well acted + lavishly merged with original footage from those terrible years.

Focused in this way, this 3-DVD-set only uses 'Great History' to support its ordinary people-stories of misfortune, dirt, death, grief and suffering. The chosen presentation is highly enrichened by a careful choice of its participants from many belligerent countries, including some of Eastern Europe. As well as by thoughtfully arranging their stories in chapters like 'the onslaught', the 'heart's desire' and 'the home front'.

Underlining its approach even more, '14 Diaries of the Great War' also emphasizes on how World War 1 severely broke people's attitudes towards life & society. This war cruelly shattered their well-reasoned optimism for mankind's bright future -- an optimism that was never fully restored.

Being an international co-production from more that 15 tv-companies. '14 Diaries of the Great War' shows as epic as German productions like 'die Flucht' (2007) and 'Unsere Mutter, unsere Vater' (2013) -- both dealing with the Second World War. All productions convincingly tell you how common life must have been in the 20th century's two most terrible wars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting series, 29 Jun 2014

However, it leaves an impression of being historically inaccurate in several respects and very hollow and lacking, especially in the area of bringing anything (relevant, old or new) about the Sarajevo assassination and the nature and history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire rule. For a moment even, while listening about multiethnicity of the Austro-Hungarian Empire I thought someone was speaking about Austro-Hungarian Empire like its some pre-EU creation (!?). Particularly, a claim from the very first minutes of the first episode which only gets repeated later on, stuck in my mind: claim that Serbia is behind the assassination in Sarajevo and thus responsible for WWI, and not the Austro-Hungarian empire who basically used the assassination as an excuse for exploring its hegemonic tendencies and invasion of other countries, like Belgium and Luxembourg among the first on August 2nd and 4th 1914. For me this "factual" introductory narrative, not at all elaborated and supported by any facts mentioned later in the series, very much influenced how I perceived the rest of the series. Especially since such conclusions contradict majority of publicly available information on causes of WWI, like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I - [...]
Nevertheless, these factual "errors" doesn't prevent viewers from learning more about the WWI from some personal/individual views. As long as one is able to ignore the narration.
