Before I bought this book I fgelt I had to ask myself if I really needed another book on "Operation Rhine Exercise" which took place in May 1941 taking Bismarck and Prinz Eugen into the Atlantic to raid our convoy system.

The authors style of writing is easy to read and holds the reader, it reads well and asks some interesting questions whilst making good observations , these strands the author draws together to explain what went wrong and how seemingly small decisions became major problems as bad luck and good gunnery came to decide the fate of Germany's most powerful battleship.

Whilst the book reads well at times it gives the impression that the author is in a hurry to tell his story and I came away with the impression that it was all a little rushed.
The book is quite well illustrated , good clear plates , the font size is good and it is easy to read.
The maps and diagrams are a little disappointing some seem to be taken from other sources and seem not to have been drawn for this book, they appear a little unclear and in this respect the book could have been better.

There is no list of sources nor a bibliography and I feel that this is a weakness in any book or work.

The author does make some good observations on the planning and conduct of the operation from both British and Germany points of view and he makes some good observations on the conduct of the Operation from both sides.

In short this is a good read but at times a little more detail would have been appreciated.
