5.0 out of 5 stars Painstaking research
Shredded is one of the most compulsive books I have ever read. I regularly had to pinch myself to make sure it was not science fiction but a real life story that I was reading. There are many villains brutally exposed. I wonder if the Crown Prosecution Service will read this book and decide to open proceedings urgently?

Ian Fraser has painstakingly gathered a...

This book provides an interesting account of the fall of RBS. I'm not sure how balanced it is though. Much of the first part focusses on Fred Goodwin and seems to suggest that his early strategy and decisions were unsound although I believe they were little different from the decisions that would have been taken by many other bankers at that time. The theme seems to be...

4.0 out of 5 stars How not to run a bank, 16 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Shredded: Inside RBS: The Bank that Broke Britain (Kindle Edition)
Expected it just to be about Sir Fred, so pleasantly surprised others came in for a roasting for their part. Gobsmacked at the level of double standards, greed and bullying in the banking world of that era (although not convinced all lessons have been learnt). An excellent read, and throughly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Reads like a crime novel...........come to think of it, it is about the crime of the century....READ IT NOW!!!, 20 Jun 2014

This is a tremendous read. It gives you the genesis of Royal Bank through it's meteoric rise to one of the world's largest banks. It shows how lack of regulation allowed the banks to bloat themselves to levels never seen before and then leads you through the catastrophic consequences of their failure. It's the fall of the Roman Empire all over the back.
I'd read Inside Job by Charles Ferguson which showed the American side of this calamity but Shredded let's us lift the lift on what happened here. It also shows the massive problems RBS still has to deal with. That will be a sequel I suppose.......
There have been no prosecutions over what happened, why? Ask your MP to read this. It would do us all a favour going forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!, 2 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is one of the best researched and informative books I have read. Everybody should read Shredded and it should be on all school lists. The sheer chicanery of all in high (earnings) office is illustrative of what a chump the ordinary tax-paying moral citizen is made by the great and (bad) good.
Having read page one I could not out it down. Along with The Tower of Babel amazing insights are offered into our present political/financial/business world.
The author Ian Fraser deserves a Nobel Prize, if only those awards any longer had credibility. Instead I will just say Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars What made it worse was he was a slimey ar*e licker to boot, 30 July 2014
As someone who worked for RBS for 15 years (and still has the scars to prove it) it was refreshing to read that I am not the only person that was sadistically bullied by a manager who knew he could get away with it.

What made it worse was he was a slimey ar*e licker to boot. Arrggghhh.

Dignity at work, promoting diversity, treating people fairly - all hollow words.

Who is going to rock the boat for someone at the bottom of the food chain, is more like it.

REVIEW FROM RALPH WINTON OBE (ex senior banker) - " Many thanks for your Email and for lending me Ian Fraser's book "Shredded". As a retired banker from another era I found his book absolutely fascinating. Not only must enormous research have been entailed but his grasp of a complex subject, as international banking is today, is faultless. Clearly, he would have no difficulty in landing a top post, should he ever wish a change of profession! His book warrants the highest commendation and applause.

This review is from: Shredded: Inside RBS: The Bank that Broke Britain (Kindle Edition)
An incisive and revealing look inside the banking crisis, and how one person, who was a bullying, power mad, megalomaniac, who actually thought he was a superstar, could almost bring down a country.
Superbly described in non banking language for the layman. I will be checking to see if he has written any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could not put it down, 3 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I just could not put it down! Having been badly treated by RBS and ongoing, it gave me more ammunition for my fight.

At times a bit confusing re dates, but there was so much going on at once. Would have liked a few charts at the back noting share price movements and a timeline of what happened.

Very well written and a must for all RBS clients

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty scary stuff this, 5 July 2014

Pretty scary stuff this. But what really grates is the fact that the bank could get away with it, their accountant's were either incompetent or lied about the debts, and the government still bailed them out.

This review is from: Shredded: Inside RBS: The Bank that Broke Britain (Kindle Edition)
Very good, the truth will out ! the culture at RBS was shocking. New item; "Big Ego" Fred requested on a visit to a major office that the phones were turned off ! paperwork removed from desks ! personnel were not to move ". Security men manned the lift, like in a film and waste paper bins were searched ! What school of business was that from , I wonder ?
