4.0 out of 5 stars INTRIGUING AND ORIGINAL, 19 Jun 2008

Gavin Dobson's largely autobiographical short stories are written with impressive wit and concision. The writer is adept at transforming the unlikely into the credible, and peppers what are at times serious tales with sufficient humour to make them palatable. Clearly a full-scale novel is called for!

4.0 out of 5 stars short stories linger longest, 21 Mar 2008
This review is from: Tales of a Free Spirit (Paperback)
Gavin R Dobson does a clever thing in linking these short stories by having the same protagonist, Geordie. He invokes his readers' attention and sympathy for a very young Geordie in the first story, and they are then hooked and keen to follow his progress through life - but unlike a novel, each story is complete and can stand entirely on its own, so that a time-pressed reader is less likely to experience the frustration of having to stop reading at a crucial moment. Some stories are funny, some sad, some embarrassing, some better than others, but the emotions at their heart are always true and recognisably familiar. As the intriguing cover illustration suggests, Tales of a Free Spirit makes a quirky and absorbing travelling companion. Every commuter should have one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories that stay with you, 2 Feb 2012
This review is from: Tales of a Free Spirit (Paperback)
A greatly entertaining and possibly somewhat provocative collection of excellently written short stories which cleverly explore very different situations in the protagonist Geordie's life. Through these tales we see that Geordie is a well-rounded and complex character who is at times innocent and vulnerable, while bitter and cocky at others, but always completely likeable. Each story is so well written and the scenes so wonderfully described that when I think back on the stories I can visualize each one as clearly as if I were remembering a film I had watched. Of the ten stories my favourites were The Popsicle Man (loved Cicero and Geordie's suicidal rebelliousness near the end), The Contrarian (what a great ending, and what a wonderful character Aristide is), and The Big Smoke (quite simply hilarious). I hope others get to enjoy these stories as much as I did. Can't wait to read the next collection of Geordie stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have book, 27 Mar 2008

This is the first of Gavin Dobsons book of short stories and he brilliantly entwines his fiction with what must be semi autobiographical, the harsh and the funny lessons of life unravel in each of the stories. The life of the main character Geordie Kinloch continues in 'The Novice and Other Stories' which is equally compelling.
