If Dan lived in the USA he would not have needed to write this book as possibly no law would have been transgressed. However, past atrocities such as Dunblane mean that there is zero tolerance in this country for any gun related crime. 3.0 out of 5 stars Useful read
Useful if one is likely to get locked up... the book could have been shorter if the style was different. No comment

If Dan lived in the USA he would not have needed to write this book as possibly no law would have been transgressed. However, past atrocities such as Dunblane mean that there is zero tolerance in this country for any gun related crime. Dan's bipolar condition was not recognised and no sympathy extended by the courts at the time of his offence.
His time in prison has given him time to reflect on his self confessed moment of stupidity and the anguish he caused his wife, their families and friends. As well as being a valuable guide to what to expect should you be sentenced to a spell in prison it is a salutary lesson to us all that one thoughtless action can result in such devastating effects on yourself and others. By writing this book Dan has given us a glimpse, not only in the workings of life in prison but an insight to his character and a way of saying sorry for what he did. I wish him well for the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ!, 7 Jun 2014

Dan writes in a matter of fact way, but with humor.
This book is great for the first timers, but is also very informative for the general public who have never considered the true reality of what goes on in prison.
This is a refreshingly frank account of prison life and puts to bed lots of myths that the media publishes as fact.
A great read!

'Prison On An L Plate' is by far the best and most intelligently written book I've ever read on the subject of day to day life in a UK mens prison.

The author writes from first-hand experience about every aspect of serving a prison sentence. From the police pounding on the door of his house 6am all the way through to adjusting to life after release from prison, it's all there in this book - including lots of anecdotes and humorous observations.

Whatever your reason for reading up on this subject, you'll find it packed with useful information, and the author's own set of 'rules' should be an invaluable guide for anyone expecting a custodial sentence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and engaging, 15 Jun 2014

I downloaded this for research on a possible book and read it in almost one session (sorry Dan, world cup on TV!).

A bit more proofreading would have gone a long way, and maybe keeping some details of the rules for the appendix would have helped, but maybe that is being fussy.

Really interesting book from a very engaging writer. If you are reading this in advance of a potential jail time, you are in safe hands with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended to everyone., 6 July 2014

This is a very unusual, and very interesting book about prison life. Although it's written to give advise to prospective prisoners, it still makes for very interesting reading for anyone who has even the slightest interest in prison life. I feel much better informed after reading this book and highly recommend it to everyone. There are quite a few editing errors but I still feel it deserves the 5-star rating.

Refreshingly honest account of the realities of losing your freedom. Packed with practical advice which I wish I had had access to a few years ago to help friends in this position. As others have said, this book really does give an insight into prison life. Read and then ask if you think prisons are too 'soft' - I left this book realising the loss of control over your life prison takes.

Very interesting and well written. I would suggest that anyone thinking of working in Probation services or doing volunteering with 18 - 24 year olds such as Princes trust would find this a useful read.
The standard of the writing lifts it above some similar books. I am keeping an eye open for the follow up.

A really insightful and I would guess helpful book. Difficult to read at times because it reminds us all that life is unpredictable and the events leading up to Dan's imprisonment could happen to any one of us. I would like to see it used a sociology textbook in schools and compulsory reading for anyone who normally reads the Daily Mail or Express!
