4.0 out of 5 stars Myanmar's rapid change is making all guidebooks out of date very quickly. But this one is still useful...
I agree it's out of date in places, but Myanmar is a country that is changing rapidly and it's hard to blame the Authors for this. It's great for the basics of what to see, the culture, history etc. But take the pricing and what's hot and how to get around with a grain of salt. Transport options were rapidly changing in previous no go areas, ATM machines have popped up...

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
I have been travelling with Lonely Planet guides for many years and this is one of the worst so far (if not the worst). It is poorly researched and updated. 1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 9 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been travelling with Lonely Planet guides for many years and this is one of the worst so far (if not the worst). It is poorly researched and updated. Among other things, it misses great restaurants that have in business for years (I am not talking about hidden gems, but places that are routinely recommended by hostels and locals); the critical section "Getting there and away" is worse than average, and the recommendations on accommodation tend to be a joke ($200-400/night hotels). Terrible job.

It's great for the basics of what to see, the culture, history etc. But take the pricing and what's hot and how to get around with a grain of salt. Transport options were rapidly changing in previous no go areas, ATM machines have popped up most cities, some hotels took Credit Cards, and new hotels/guest houses are cropping up weekly. If you use this book for the basics about Myanmar and it's people, and then use something like TripAdvisor, Booking.com, Agoda, Hotels.com to check reviews and pricing on accommodation, then use TripAdvisor to review and price activities, sites, and in some cases transport then you have a pretty good tool kit for travel.

Fantastic - used on our recent trip to Myanmar and it helped take us to many areas where we were on our own and enjoying amazing vistas and sites. It was very up to date and provided a great reference for the trip.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst outdated update I have seen of a lonelyplanet guide, 24 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Lonely Planet Myanmar (Burma) (Travel Guide) (Kindle Edition)
many things have changed in Mynmar since so called "Democracy" and the 2010 elections and many places before 2012 inaccessible, have now become open to backpackers ie overland entry and exit via Kawthung and Maesot . Also overland exit via chin district to India previously innattainable by local bus. Also Maruk is accessible by local bus denied previously. The book glosses over the genocide of the rohygha and is at best just a rhash of the very poor 2011 version. Lonelyplanet and the author Simon Richmond should be ashamed of their lack of principles and efforts in areas where teh backpacker will be dissappointed if he/she takes their advice on areas they suggest still you can only fly, whereas those of us who love Myanmar andits people grab these opportunities to head into previously uncharted territory whilst this guide book and its lack of reseaarch by the author shows disresepct for those backpackers who are its target, although I personally think its aimed at upmarket accommodation for the "Flashpacker" (see kalow) and yet still sends the naive and trusting backpacker into places noted for their cheating tourists like Golden Lilly in Kalow etc lacks research and also lacks important changes in travel within Myanmar as with Mraukk U chin state and myiktyna etc etc although it took 7 years for them to acknowledge sein sein in Bhamo as best restaurant, somethin stefan loose acknowledged years before and I personally found by accident . Sorry but out of date and disresepctful to thise who want a vauable updated guide to thsi beautiful country

2.0 out of 5 stars Superficial and out of date., 22 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Myanmar is changing quickly and accordingly this guide is already out of date. The authors cannot of course be blamed for this. However the coverage of the history and culture of Myanmar is at best superficial. I would only give it 2 stars because it is the only guide available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful guide, 25 Aug. 2014

I used this 2014 edition of the Lonely Planet during my journey through Burma from July to end of August. Probably the best guide you can get with a lot practical and useful information. From my experience, information seems to be accurate and up to date.
