this has to be one of my favourite books ever. i've read it about 6 times, and its not small. it follows the classic hero - slightly undertrodden (so that you feel empathy for the charicter) who has a sort of super power (he cannot be remembered for more then a few hours - makes for some interesting plot twists) who gets caught up in some weird goings on, acompanied by a very pretty lady, a precogniciant snail (or crab - i forget) and a telepathic weasel. They adventure through many dangerous situation, meet many more mutants with all sorts of weird and wonderful afflictions and powers, and go on to save the universe, or at least their own hides. Brilliant. But be warned- like a lot of his work, this is very clever in parts but definitly not great lituriture (mind the spelling). if you are looking for that, read 1984.
but seriously, BUY THIS BOOK

Very unusual and gripping book but I struggled with the last few chapters. Frustrated that the story is not resolved and there is no sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anthony at his best, 3 Nov 2013

This full-length novel was written over thirty years ago, during what I have come to regard as Anthony's golden period. It was heavily edited at that time and appeared in a much abbreviated form. This Kindle version is the 'director's cut', and it shows. The writing is tight and elegant, with powerful themes and complex, well-drawn characters. It is essentially an adventure story but, in typical Anthony style, the author introduces ideas on sex, religion, society, bigotry and the nature of consciousness, but in an unobtrusive way that is thought-provoking rather than overly didactic. Anthony's imagination is prodigious, when he gives it free rein, and this novel must rank as one of his best. I would love to read the sequel but, sadly, it never materialised, so I shall have to rely upon my own imagination rather than that of this master story-teller.

Interesting from opening paragraph, and kept me hooked to end. Just a shame there is no sequel to this one!

After many years of wanting to read the full version of Mute, I splashed out on a Kindle and bought it. It's a great read and well worth buying. Psi-animals and psi-humans battle with lobos for control of the all powerful central computer.
