Great fun, game play much improved, not sure about the story mode,

I'm a Lego games fan, own almost all of them and I was very impressed with this one.
That said the story campaign wasn't really to my taste, lots of long cut scenes and wandering round the level hub, I'd quite often gotten fed up before reaching the proper level. They've spent rather a lot of time making up a rather complex plot and I suppose it would make quite a good film if you were just watching but when you're waiting to play the game it seemed unnecessarily delaying and you can't skip them in story mode. In fact someone has made a Youtube video of all the cutscenes joined together and it has a 1 hour 17 minute run time if you want to watch them as a movie! This is really more 'The Justice League' than a Batman game and the different characters & their abilities are used to good effect. The bits of individual theme tunes are great too (Wonder Woman!). What it has been taken from the Batman games are the ability suits, happily using the first games 'choose your suit from the wheel' feature not the second games find, build and use a changing booth thing that was rather annoying, rather quickly. One feature I was very happy with was the ability to replay levels not just from the start but from the checkpoints making 100% completion much less frustrating when you don't have to play the whole level to find the last mini-kit (Harry Potter Year 7 'Might is Magic' level I'm thinking of you here!). Other than that this is a standard Lego game, smash everything, collect studs etc. The achievements add a little more reason to replay a few areas and are rather nice to get, though of the 70 listed on Steam only 40 can be gained without the DLC you get with the Season Pass, might buy that one day... I finished the retail game with all achievements in 39 hours or so which makes it longer than Batman 2 but less then the first one and lot less than Lego Marvel with it's huge free roam area. Several reviews on here mention the controller not being found by the game, I've got two controllers, one very new X-Box type [Logitech F310] and an older but fancier one, the new one worked instantly but it wasn't too hard to map the buttons of the older one the work as well, from the controller options menu.

Best Lego game so far?,

Firstly I am here to review the game itself - not judge it for being on Steam. For the game I give 5 stars.
The Good: The game play is excellent and comprehensive and I love the little touches (like original 70's Wonder Woman theme from the TV show when she flies!). There were no compatibility issues - the wired XBOX and wirelesst XBOX 360 controllers work fine. No crashes on my high spec laptop or 7 year old top spec PC - both on 7/8.1. The Steam back end ensures that you can save a game on the laptop and continue playing on the PC - nice! I know console jockies have done this for years but to the PC it's relatively new. The Bad: The ney-sayers of having "Steam" back end are numerous so let's not go there. There are some advantages and some disadvantages. The only thing I object to is that after paying £20 for a game you have to spend another £20 for the full content. I won't be doing so! After about 5 hours of game play I've completed 4 of 15 levels (I explore and collect all he coins!) They all have to be repeated in free play again - plus there are the intermediate bits - I recon it'll be 25 hours to complete - excellent value for money. I 100% completed the second game so hope when it's all unlocked there's a similar open area with puzzles - but I'll have to wait and see!!!

My two sons aged 9 and 11 have played all the previous lego PC games and loved them all. My sons always play using Xbox controllers. I bought them Lego Batman 3 for Christmas. Big mistake. There is a known bug with this game in that many computers do not recognise Xbox controllers, so my sons tried playing with the keyboard but soon gave up. I wish I had searched Google before I bought this game. I do not understand how a company that has made so many good Lego PC games can have made such a mess this time.

Bought this as we have enjoyed pretty much all the other lego titles but this is (along with pirates of the carribean) the one that we have played the least - we only got about halfway through before the kids got bored and gave up on it (compared to over 100 hours poured into the Lego marvel game which is just far, far superior in terms of its gameplay). Hard to put a finger on the issues with this one but whatever it is, it just doesnt seem as much fun as the others.

There are many improvements to the interface compared to the previous game in this series. However overall I preffered the missions and games of the previous one. However my son loves this and hasnt stopped playing it since it was released.

Lego game of the decade?,
This review is from: LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham (PC DVD) (Video Game)
Really good game! Everyone's complaining about controllers but it clearly says you need an official Xbox 360 wired controller. It's a good game, runs well and is very enticing. Would recommend!
