4.0 out of 5 stars Another Vintage Archive Release For The Butterfly Hard-Core., 21 July 2014
This review is from: Live in Sweden 1971 (Audio CD)
Recent times have been kind to Butterfly fans as the archives have been prised open, resulting in a handful of essential live artefacts seeing the light of day - such as 'Fillmore East 1968' & 'Live At The Galaxy 1967', both of which are must have's for Butterfly fans of any persuasion.
Joining them is 'Live In Sweden 1971', which was taped on the penultimate night of Iron Butterfly's 1971 European tour in Gothenburg for a Swedish radio broadcast, featuring the 'Metamorphosis' line-up: Doug Ingle (voc/keys), Mike Pinera (voc/gtr), Larry Reinhardt (gtr), Lee Dorman (bass) & Ron Bushy (drums).
The tapes did not roll long enough to capture the whole show, instead recording 50 minutes of music - long enough, however, to capture the sound of Butterfly in full flow as they jam their way through two 23 minute+ herculean slabs of improvisation, namely, 'Butterfly Bleu' and the inevitable 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'.
The sound quality is very good, although Reinhardt's guitar falls way back in the mix (especially during 'Butterfly'), while Mike Pinera's vocals suffer the same fate, although Doug Ingle's mike is unaffected.
Devotees will know what to expect as Butterfly stretch-out the compositions beyond their original forms in a typically zoned-out '70s style, although 'Da-Vida', musically speaking, stays more faithful to the original, while 'Butterfly Bleu' is maxed-out to nearly double its original length.
This release is available on Vinyl and CD, although I recommend the CD version as it includes 3 bonus tracks not included on the Vinyl release.
The bonus tracks are priceless to Butterfly collecters as they comprise three of the rarest tracks in the Butterfly catalogue.
They are 'Possession (Alt. version)', 'Evil Temptation' & 'Don't Look Down On Me', all of which are outtakes taped in 1967 before (or during) the sessions for their debut LP 'Heavy'.
Left in the can, they would subsequently be released in 1970 on a pair of rare European 45s, this album marking their first appearance on CD - more details can be found on the excellent Iron Butterfly collectors website
Needless to say, this is another essential release for Butterfly freaks the world over, combining killer live performances from their heyday, as well as (on CD only), re-issuing 3 tracks that have not been officially released in over 40 years. Buy now.
