Enemies Closer.
Region 2 DVD.
Cert:15.
Running time 81 minutes

Cast.
Jean-Claude Van Damme as Xander.
Tom Everett Scott as Henry.
Orlando Jones as Clay.
Kristopher Van Varenberg as Francois.
Linzey Cocker as Kayla.
Zahari Baharov as Saul.

Plot Synopsis.
Forest ranger & Ex-Navy SEAL Henry (Tom Everett Scott) is forced by a local drug cartel led by Xander (Jean-Claude Van Damme) to help retrieve a major shipment of drugs which went missing on the US-Canadian border.

While in the woods, he runs into Clay (Orlando Jones), who has a vendetta against him. However, both men must struggle to put aside there differences to escape the forest & defeat Xander & the cartel.

Timelord Thoughts.
This is JCVD latest direct to dvd release & sees the Muscles from Brussels playing the role of a villain named Xander who is a ruthless killer & drug dealer.

Sadly Van Damme gives a way over the top performance delivering a sarcastic wit hampered with a very dodgy haircut, but it's a far better performance than his appalling villainous take as Claude Villan in Expendables 2.

The fight scenes are typical Van Damme fair but sadly the poor editing shows the stunt doubles features quite badly & the dialogue is cheesy beyond belief, why don't the bad guys just shoot people when they have the opportunity instead of talking the talk, Just shut up yakking & shoot the person & you win?

Tom Everett Scott fails to convince as a action star while Orlando Jones doesn't do much fare much better as both actor's give unmemorable performances, in fact Van Dammes performance as Xander is the best thing about the movie who at least tries to inject some personality into his character despite the dodgy hair & cheesy dialogue, but when Van Dammes performance is the best thing about the movie you know the movies in dire trouble.

Director Peter Hyams who was responsible for Van Dammes 90's action classics Timecop & Sudden Death directs JCVD again here but doesn't quite have the resources or budget that those previous movies had & fails to deliver anything spectacular or memorable here which leaves Enemies Closer as the standard straight to dvd fare.

Timelord Rating.
4/10

4.0 out of 5 stars I had a goose named Edie....., 23 Jun 2014
This review is from: Enemies Closer [DVD] (DVD)
After a major shipment of drugs goes missing on the US-Canadian border, forest ranger Henry is plunged into survival mode when the drug cartel forces him to help retrieve the downed package.

Trapped in the wilderness with no communication to the outside world, Henry finds himself face to face with Clay, a man with a personal vendetta who has come for retribution.

Now, the two enemies must make a choice. Put aside their past and work together, or die alone at the hands of the drug runners, a ruthless gang who will stop at nothing to retrieve their lost cargo.....

After the success of Van Dammes performance in Expendables 2, it was a wise choice for him to swap roles in this film, as it makes it all the more enjoyable to see him camp it up as the bad guy.

If Van Damme was the hero, this would have just been another enjoyable but average movie from the star, so it says a lot about his performance.

Narrative wise, the inclusion of Jones is pretty pointless, and doesn't add anything. If it were just Scott, it would have been more of a Die Hard type film, which is never a bad thing, and you wouldn't waste a lot of time, with silly script filler.

It's not an action movie by any means, and if you are a fan of Van Damme, it's closer to Until Death in movie terms.

But there are a few fight scenes, and they are good, but don't expect something like Double Impact.

Hyams and Van Damme are becoming a force to be reckoned with on the Direct to DVD/Blu Ray, like the cut price Scorcese and Dicaprio.

Plus Van Damme has great hair.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average DTV action-drama, 15 Aug 2014
This review is from: Enemies Closer Blu-ray (Blu-ray)
Jean-Claude Van Damme plays the villain for a change (complete with silly haircut), in this tale of criminals searching for a drug shipment on the Canadian-American border. Tom Everett Scott takes the hero role and is totally unconvincing as an ex-special forces operative. The movie is nicely shot by veteran director Peter Hyams and the fights are well staged. However Van Damme is extensively doubled in the fights, almost to a Steven Seagal level.

There isn't a lot going on (it's mostly cat-and-mouse in the woods at night) and the movie feels longer than the short 81 minute running time (including credits). After Dark Films should have done much better with the combination of Hyams and Van Damme as this is below the standard we normally get from Van Damme DTV movies.

4.0 out of 5 stars VAN DAMMAGE!!!!, 23 July 2014

VAN DAMME IS BACK!!!!

JCVD'S acting is great in this one, I loved his old movies more but you can tell his acting has matured with time.
The fight scenes are fun and exciting and his villain charm is gripping. Most of the cast are good but a few let it down with poor acting skills. The setting for this movie was chosen brilliantly and the lighting worked very well.

now let's see all his movies ported to blu ray!!!!!
