An absolute gem !! If you only know Charlie Byrd from the "Bossa Nova" records with Stan Getz you will find this 2 disc set a revelation. many of the tracks feature Byrd on acoustic guitar and the result is a plethora of delighfful performances of the highest quality. Three of the albums feature small group settings and there is one mainly featuring a larger group from 1958. 100% recommended. it is my best purchase in a long while.

This begins with his earliest album, "Jazz Recital" which concentrates mainly on his lyrical rendition of half-a-dozen ballads, but for the last two tracks where he switches to electric guitar for a bop session. "Blues for Night People" also dates from 1957, and similarly features him with bass and drums. Things loosen up on the 1958 album "Byrd's Word", which was issued originally as "Jazz at the Showboat". "The Guitar Artistry of Charlie Byrd" dates from 1960, and features Byrd with his regular trio. It's a great compilation, which showcases Byrd's classically influenced Spanish guitar playing in solo, trio and sextet settings, playing a mixture of standards and original compositions.

Great collection, but although the track selection is as listed on the album sleeve, the track/album information on CD1itself is incorrect, and refers largely to an entirely different album.
