4.0 out of 5 stars Simple Perfection, 17 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Blossom's back albeit with an album she first recorded in 1959. She is in typically fine voice on this impeccable CD reissue complete with first-rate notes and art-work as she effortlessly glides through 10 songs by Comden and Green, not all of them that well known. Indeed to these ears one of the best tracks is a song from "Two on the Aisle" that I don't recall hearing before -a fairly stark and very beautiful "How will he know". Here, as elsewhere, the playing of Kenny Burrell (guitar), Ray Brown (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums) give superb backing to Blossom's voice and piano.
As with the best Blossom albums this is essentially perfect late-night candle-lit listening or for the stillness of a perfect sunny summer afternoon - you get the idea. Versions of "Some other time" (quite the equal of Tony Bennett's classic recording), "I like myself" and "Lonley Town" are quite simply perfection. Now let's get all of her back catalogue on CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Blossom Dearie's best Verve album finaly reissued, 3 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Ah! Finaly Verve reissues Blossom Dearie sings Comden & Green, a very rare album recorded in 1959. Only one song from this CD is included on Verve jazz masters 51 so it's definitly worth to buy this one. Blossom voice is on top here and the selection of songs are just great. My favourites are Just in time, The party's over and Some other time, to mention a few. For you who never have heard Blossom this album is the first to get and for fans this is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Blossoms best...., 21 Nov 2013

Shouldn't all CD re-issues be this good? It is a classic album even without the sympathetic re-mastering allowing a degree or two extra clarity and warmth. Add informative sleeve notes and classy packaging round off matters off and you have what makes what an irresistible buy for lovers of jazz.

'BD Sings..' consists of some solo tracks with Blossom playing piano and singing and then backed with Ray Brown on bass, Ed Thigpen on drums with Kenny Burrell on guitar for the rest. Having been a long time fan of Blossom I find it hard to be objective about this set, but I'll try. Blossom has that sort of voice that once sounds arch and knowing, yet also suggests she is capable of vulnerability and romance. She's a sophisticate with a sense of fun but not so smart as to be beyond simple emotion. Blossom is one of a kind and can never be confused with any other vocalist.

This album is a varied collection of familiar and less familiar ballads and up tempo -swingers. You will know 'Just in Time' but what about the heartbreaking 'Some Other Time' and 'How Will He Know'? Great songs and all performed beautifully. The lyrics by Comden and Green are wonderful things in themselves: witty and measured but always expressing deep emotion and conviction. Love lost and love found never sounded so smart and up-town, yet at the same time, heartfelt and real. Truly moving. Mention should also be made of the band, sensitive, unobtrusive but giving Blossom that extra bit of drive and colour when required without ever trying to outdo the vocalist. Guitarists should listen out to Kenny Burrell, his solos as always mini-masterpieces of composition.
Buy this album, ideal for relaxed listening any time of day. I guarantee you'll feel better for doing so.

At long last Verve has reissued her best Verve
album on CD. She is right at home with her
wonderful versions of Comden and Green songs.
"Dance Only With Me" might be my favorite of the
lot.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've written gobs of complimentary stuff about Blossom, and have meant every word, but the worst part of this album is the wooden poses of Comden and Green with Blossom on the jacket...the music is fantastic, and the finest compliment a musician could pay to these two amazing talents...you have to include this album in your collection, you just have to! It is a picture of New York's talents of the 50's gathered around the piano...don't miss this album.
