I enjoyed this very much. I had not previously realised that there were other books by E M Delefield available, and given the subtitle of this I wondered how much of a novel and how much of a treatise this would be. In the event it was the story that held me, but the messages in it have relevance today, especially towards the end, and I think there is a lot many of us in today's world of received wisdom, divorce and broken relationships could learn from the outcome displayed here. Worth a read if only for the story, but plenty more to consider if you wish!

I didn`t know this lady had written any more than "A provincial Lady" and was delighted to see other books, about11, she`d written on Amazon. Humbug was a marvellous account of expected and accepted domination of parents towards children at the turn of the 20th century which was intended to be kindly and best for the child. It gave insight into the problems that strict overbearing parenting gave rise to when children grew to adulthood. Great descriptions of mental turmoil and excellent characterisation. I've read a number of E M Delafield novels recently, and this is one of my favourites. Similar theme to other Delafield works, but I particularly liked the way the relationship of the married couple developed, and found it moving. Couldn't put it down till I finished it, and at the same time was sorry to get to the end!

I really enjoyed " Humbug" as it was an insight into the childish mind. And showed how empathy existed between siblings.
