5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely entertaining read, 21 Jun 2005
By A Customer
I bought this book for my father who is a keen golfer. However, before wrapping it up, I started reading the first few lines, and just had to keep reading... and reading... and reading! Though not a golfer myself, I found Cairns' book to be witty and interesting, informative without being dull. He recounts some hilarious (and some downright bizarre) incidents on his journey around the public golf courses of Britain in an engaging and conversational style.
Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

THis book is excellenly written. A much needed view from a different standpoint on the growth of golf as a truly "popular"sport. The municipal course as the means for a development to classless golf. The author has a rare sense of humor which altogether makes the book a must for anyone interested in 150 years of growth in golf.

I started reading this book and could not put it down. Hilarious from the very first word, it takes you on a tour of the UK's public golf courses, and on the way, we are introduced to a selection of colourful, interesting characters.
Cairns is a wonderful writer. I look forward to his next book.
