If you like rockabilly (and who doesn't) buy it! you will NOT be disappointed some great rocking tracks and some jivers inc. the Winkmartidale - all love broke loose, it used to go down a storm, so i guess we will have to forgive deck of cards (not on this, i hastily add). Tom Dooley Rock and Roll another fav from 70's. not forgetting leopard man - I wish I could, ruddy awful to me but somone will like it, Joe wallace's mum for one.

Joking aside this is a great taste of "other" memphis sounds of the 50's, there must be Vol2 to come....?

The iconic Sun label of Memphis, Tenn., was the hugest fish in a small pond, but search in vain for any of its output here. That's because compiler Dave Penny has cast his net across many of the areas' minor labels, from one-shot releases to others that might claim to have 'catalogue'. It also happens to be a history of embryonic rock'n'roll, starting with country, then countrybilly, rockabilly thru to full-on r&r - with a taste of r&b thrown in for good measure. The whole mess is a delight, to both eye and ear.

Kicks off with some mid-pace rockin' r&b from Moohah (explained in the ample notes) from 1953, on the Starmaker label, for me, 100% on the obscurity scale. Followed by blues/r&b by Fenton Robinson on Meteor before we get into country, Hayden Thompson (Von), later to be a rockabilly. There follows a passel of mid-to-uptempo country, some roots rockabilly from Aubrey Cagle (House of Sound), more mid rockin' blues, courtesy Joe Hill Louis, aka Chicago Sunny Boy, Meteor, 1953, and some jump r&b, as Little Joe on House of Sound, vintage '57. It goes on in similar vein, mixing the genres (tho least r&b), ending with Dale Vaughn's "How Can You Be Mean To Me", for me, the first clearly identifiable rockabilly cut. And all this just a skate thru the first disc! Only another 67 to go...(= bliss).

Much of the content here became familiar to me in the early/mid 1970's, mainly by various bootleg albums and repro 45s and combing thru sundry utterly specialist sales lists, noting some of the sky-high prices for the 'originals'. Labels such as Von, Meteor, Moon, Peak, Jaxon Benton and Hill Crest became familiar, but wither Kim, Sky, Hornet, Atomic, Lu, Katche, Cathey, Hut and others? No worries, full colour scans of these and others on display here - high droolabilly factor! (Don't, makes the paper soggy). The notes themselves in the 20-page booklet are almost scholarly, but in a very readable, enjoyable way, they'll add to your education. By way of PS, Dave points out that several other Memphiscentric labels/artists are not present here, but mainly because they've been well anthologised elsewhere in recent years, not least by some previous Fantastic Voyage sets. (Hmm, tuff choice, but my fave track is "Big Sandy", Bobby Roberts, on Sky, 1956: frantic pace, yelping vocals, serious guitar).

Ponder this: if Elvis had wandered in to, say, Erwin Records back in '54, label being the new boy in town and offering custom pressing facilities, would the world be the same today? Anyway, go buy this, you CAN'T be disappointed (and if you are, I'll send the boys around for A Word).

Another great album well packaged and well researched. To even attempt now days to get these tracks on vinyl unless you're very wealthy would take years. Many of the artists are known but there is more than enough boppers n rarities to keep any collector and new comer to rocking very happy.

This is a truly excellent rockin' set.

Beautifully packaged and with one of Dave Penny's incredibly informative booklets, this is one of Fantastic Voyage's best releases yet.

Keep 'em coming!
