5.0 out of 5 stars A gardening DVD with a difference
I always enjoy gardening DVDs and this one is no exception. I always enjoy gardening DVDs and this one is no exception. There are two discs which mainly cover four iconic English gardens, each created during a different era and providing insight into the life of the people who created them. The first garden is Great Dixter, a family home of gardener and gardening writer, Christopher Lloyd. Moving away from industrial England, he created a colourful, natural, exuberant garden in the Sussex countryside. There is no rigid formality but is rather on the wild side with garden beds merging onto the paths. It is a beautiful interesting garden but would not be my first choice. Gardening is so very much an individual thing!
The second garden is Stowe, expressing the ideas of Richard Temple where politics and gardening are interwoven. The garden represents a political story with a moral slant. There is a garden of virtue and a garden of vice with various statues and design bringing out the story. It is very interesting but I imagine that one would need a guide book to fully understand the story. This would not be absolutely necessary as one could just enjoy the garden that is there with its incredible design.
The third garden is Biddulph Grange and is very much my first choice. It consists of different "rooms" or smaller gardens, each created with its own theme. Apart from the beautiful planting scheme, what really wowed me was the design where one "exited" one garden through a man made tunnel, only to be surprised by the opening view of the next garden. Quite breathtaking!
The third garden is Nymans. Also a very beautiful garden with interesting plantings. This garden was badly affected by the extreme weather of 1987 and therefore gives one an impression that it is still a garden under construction.
Viewing these gardens, I learned something of garden design and just how individual a garden can be. Thank you.
