5.0 out of 5 stars Great Improvement to Sound
The merits of these performances are well known. My main interest here is the effect of the remastering, because all too often the results of such processes are only a marginal improvement. I am pleased to say that, compared with previous issues, listening to this is like having a curtain pulled out of the way. The improvement is obvious in any format - Bluray, CD or...

2.0 out of 5 stars especially those which already sounded great on CD
Sure, the Blu-ray High Definition Audio disc can beat the CD red book sound but to my ears this "early" recording is woefully lacking in those qualities which would be demonstrated so vividly by the High Definition format: when the violins reach their upper registers and with some energy, both formats sound as though the strings are screeching somewhat and it is a...

The merits of these performances are well known. My main interest here is the effect of the remastering, because all too often the results of such processes are only a marginal improvement. I am pleased to say that, compared with previous issues, listening to this is like having a curtain pulled out of the way. The improvement is obvious in any format - Bluray, CD or MP3 (I streamed the latter at 320 kbps from Qobuz). The improvements going from MP3 to CD or from CD to Bluray are more subtle, but they are there. Listening to this on bluray gave me a new appreciation of the music and the performances. Very worthwhile.

This review is from: Rachmaninov: The Piano Concertos & Paganini Rhapsody (Audio CD)
This brilliant performance is only enhanced by the excellent remastered sound quality. What sets this recording apart is the close positioning of the stage microphones and the equal balance between piano and orchestra. In most other recordings, the piano is much louder than the orchestra, and the orchestra is recorded from a distance to simulate sitting in the audience, instead of the conductor's stand.

Sure, the Blu-ray High Definition Audio disc can beat the CD red book sound but to my ears this "early" recording is woefully lacking in those qualities which would be demonstrated so vividly by the High Definition format: when the violins reach their upper registers and with some energy, both formats sound as though the strings are screeching somewhat and it is a tiring listen. Why can we not have more modern recordings put on Blu-ray, especially those which already sounded great on CD? For those of us who shrink from buying "live performances" due to the inevitable audience coughing in quiet passages, please let us have modern, decent studio recordings in this new High Definition format.
