4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Movie
This is a really good, fun film. Well made and acted, and superb characters that are well acted. Well worth a watch.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing and a waste of some fine actors
Very disappointing and a waste of some fine actors; there is only so much actors of the caliber of Vicky Mclure can do with a poor screenplay and mediocre direction, although some fine cameo appearances by (an unbelievably young looking) Maxine Peake, Martin Freeman and Alan McGee (yes, he of Creation Records/Oasis fame) are very entertaining. A "feel-good" film...

A "feel-good" film? (as one reviewer enthusiastically described it) - I don't think so. An extremely frustrating film that had so much potential and failed to deliver - and the ending is the most frustrating part of all. Love conquers all. Really?? It certainly didn't conquer my boredom and irritation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 7 April 2014
This review is from: Svengali [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
I'm confused at reading the other inexplicably positive reviews for this film. It's really very poor and, aside from a few surprising cameo appearances, cannot be commended. In a nutshell this film is old fashioned, cheesy and unfunny. If that's your thing then fill your boots!

I loved the original short clips produced on youtube a few years ago. The cameos, humour and script was just right. Sadly the film didn't live up to these early original clips. The reworked sections based upon these clips were poor and the film cheesy.

For me the best early clip joked on about Eddie Pillar as Mr Secret Affair... where was the man himself in the film?

Wanted to love it, but let down..... sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must watch for the fans of british pop culture, 5 Mar 2014

Saw this film at Edinburgh Film Festival and followed the webisodes, and found the film very light and funny, with a steady plot, but a must watch for any fan of the british pop culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars The coolest feel-good film of the year., 6 Mar 2014
This review is from: Svengali [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
Svengali tells the story of Dixie (Jonny Owen), a postman from South Wales, and a music fanatic. All his life he's dreamed of discovering a great band and then one day, trawling through YouTube, he finds them... 'The Premature Congratulations'. He hunts them down and offers them his management services. They are young, arrogant, sexy and utterly magnificent. Putting their demo on a cassette tape, Dixie heads out onto the streets of London... Innocent, wide-eyed Dixie embarks on a roller coaster ride through the most infamous industry of them all. His partner and his sanity through it all is his soulmate Michelle (Vicky McClure). Every day is a battle for Dixie, totally broke and working for nothing to get his beloved band gigs, their egos grow with their stardom. The more successful The Prems get, the greater the chances are of Dixie losing them. He has to decide what are his real priorities in life... his love of music or his love for Michelle.

A great film with an excellent cast and brilliant soundtrack.
