4.0 out of 5 stars a great read, 24 April 2014

A great read! Dan gave me a real appreciation of what it takes to undertake such a ( crazy ! ) solo expedition, with no attempt at glorification but an honest account of the highs and lows, demonstrating what it means to really know you are alive - whilst at times being so close to possible peril.
Wrap up warm to read this - you will feel the cold! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read about an intrepid adventure, 13 April 2014

I loved this read which I found inspirational. Dan is clearly a principled and brave explorer. His descriptions of the weather conditions and how he fought to overcome them had me quickly turning the pages to find out how he survived. Looking forward to the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indeed an Endeavour, 7 May 2014

If you think you are going to get a highly polished book akin to Fiennes et al, you will be mistaken. This is a book written from the heart and from the recollections recorded by Dan and his wife as he attempted the almost impossible. Dan's style is simple but compelling and I found it difficult to stop reading this and turn the light out to get some sleep. Dan is not a man who is afraid to be alone and for someone that essentially broke their wrist in the opening hours of their adventure show the determination he had to finish the task he had set himself and this comes through clearly in his writings. At many points throughout the book you feel you are the invisible on-looker, the fly on the wall (albeit slightly frozen) as Dan describes in detail his surroundings and what has happened to him.

Buy this, download it, however you get hold of it read it and learn from it.

Dan's account of the highs and lows of solo expeditions and the value of being prepared is a thoroughly compelling read and a must for any fan of expedition or mountaineering literature. I'm looking forward to part II.

An excellent, gripping, short read in the vein of '27 Hours' and 'All is lost'.
