I'm attempting top rate the item rather than the movie itself ,which would be a very personal assessment. This DVD works and was cheap. My only unexpected surprise was that this is in 4:3 format, the old TV screen format rather than widescreen. I imagine that might upset some people. Mind you, I didn't read the description that closely - just went for it.

....or in these times equally a girls own adventure. I bought this DVD after attending the Goodwood revival and seeing the original B17 used in the film (the Sally B). All those beautiful old war-birds and out of work actors strutting about in A2 jackets reminded me of the story of the Memphis Belle. It is a good old fashioned war movie, lots of action and character development (but mostly action!). The original story was apparently based on an RAF Lancaster crew but the B17 was though to open up the American market. But the transition works very well. It's the sort of film I wouldn't mind my children watching, not too much bad language, no gratuitous graphic violence and a (reasonably) happy ending (if you happen to be one of the allies). In WW2 about 1/3 of the allied bomber crews lost their lives and the central section in the movie, when the base-commander ticks off the publicity guy, still catches in my throat, if you've seen it then you know what I mean. Now if only they had used the Lancaster.....

The 'Memphis Belle' ( Boeing, B-17 B Flying-Fortress ) and it's 10-Man crew,
'Capt. Dennis Dearborn' 'Sgt. Danny Daly' '1st Lt. Luke Sinclair' 'Lt. Phil
Lowenthal' 'Lt Val Kozlowski' 'Sgt Richard Moore' 'Sgt Clay Busby' 'Sgt
Virgil Hoogestergar' 'Sgt Eugene McVey' and 'Sgt Jack Bocci' --have flown
24 missions, one more, and they get to go home.
In all the raids over German Territory the plane hasn't picked up as much as
a scratch, the plane and it's crew were becoming a legend.
The 25th mission for the 'Belle' and her young crew will prove to be the most
dangerous yet, they are to make a daylight raid into the very Heart of Germany,
a factory in 'Bremen'
The film re-creates how things pan-out throughout the mission, there are many
tense moments for the 'Belle's' Ten-Man crew as they encounter frequent attacks
from 'German-fighter-aircraft' as they enter enemy territory.
Tensions build amongst the crew as they close in on the target, they meet intense
anti-aircraft fire.
The losses among the Squadron mounts, this is a well made 'World War 11 ' Drama.
Will the 'Memphis Belle's' crew complete there mission and return to base as they
had done 24 times before.
Picture Quality - A little better than on DVD - Sound Quality - fine.
Special Features -
* Climb into the cockpit 'William Wyler' directed documentary - The Memphis Belle :-
Story of a Flying-Fortress.
* Theatrical Trailer.

Whilst i like the film itself I am deeply disappointed with the Blu Ray picture quality, even on a top Blu Ray player the picture quality is crud. Best saving money and buy the standard DVD and have your Blu Ray player upscale it

I haven't watched this movie in years, i bought it and i can't believe i haven't watched it sooner. its a classic war movie, with great shots of the aircraft in flight. I know many people have moaned about the picture quality, but to be honest how many war movies are in HD and i think it adds to the movie, but seriously its not that bad, if you scrutinized every frame you might notice how it looks a little old but hey its an old movie simple. all that aside i think its a great movie which really shows how these 10 men had to work close together and the friendships that form. i would recommend this movie to anyone who likes war movies and aerial movies especially.

A must buy, just all the historical references in it, the great aerial shots, and the true spirit of these guys working together.

Purchased for nostalgic reasons as some years ago after the film was made a friend of mine won one of the leading actors Flight Jackets on a national radio phone in, i hadnt seen the film and saw it very reasonably priced on Amazon it reminded me of all those years ago, the film is full of all the expected wartime film cliches but was entertaining and easy to watch and follow, it also gave some sort of insight into what the RAF guys had to content with in the air and also on the ground, full of all the usual bombing raids/dog-fights/emotional traumas and romances it s a good film if you want something easy to watch that doesnt require massive concentration...If this suits you then Memphis Belle fits the bill and at the current Amazon price..a bargain..

I chose this rating because it is one of those films that I could see several times over. In fact I already owned the tape and bought the DVD because I wanted to be able to view it after my old VCR finally expired. One of the things that this film brought home to me was how very young these brave men were. It hadn't occurred to me before, because most of the films I had seen about the Second World War had rather mature actors in these roles. For example, The Dam Busters. Richard Todd was the lead and he was a very sensible stiff- upper- lip sort of chap. As a child, I met young servicemen and of course they seemed old to me. I felt very sad after the film ended at the terrible waste of young life.

10 brave young men who are willing to give it their all to defend freedom. These young men are of course old men now,bu they can tell you of what they did to keep what we of today take for granted-our freedom. They and their friends paid for that with their blood and some of them with their lives. It will make the young people of today respect these old men-heroes they were and still are.Watch this one-it will amke you see the things they had to encounter and face nearly every day of their lives.

I gave this DVD five stars because it is one of the best films I've seen! Set in WW2 it portrays the part the Americans played in the war fighting alongside their allies. The Memphis Belle had one last mission before the boys got to go back to the USA and on this last mission they nearly didn't make it. It was very well done, and I felt transported back in time watching this film. I would recommend this DVD to watch- you wont be disappointed I know I wasn't!

I first saw this movie in 1993, when it came out on TV, and I was mesmerised. For a movie of the nineties, it does not question the war, it does not moralise about why we were fighting. It accepts the fact that there was a war, and weaves a story around it. Yes there are the twee bits, but then maybe life is like that? Overall, a stunning movie, and the only two war movies which (in my opinion) surpass it are, of course, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. Like these two, you really feel that you are there, taking part in the action, and you will finish watching it on the edge of your seat - every time!
