4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a good movie but not Rock Hudson's best I think
This DVD arrived on time and in good condition. I wasn't sure about this movie to begin with but warmed to the story as time went on, it became quite intense towards the end and I can say that we quite enjoyed it. Not a favourite maybe but not bad.

3.0 out of 5 stars Angels with Dirty Semi-Automatics
Much-criticised on its original release at a time when the notion of boy soldiers was something people didn't want to talk about, Hornet's Nest is pretty obscure these days - it never plays on TV, was only briefly released on video in the US a couple of decades ago and for years was only on DVD in Spain. Much-criticised on its original release at a time when the notion of boy soldiers was something people didn't want to talk about, Hornet's Nest is pretty obscure these days - it never plays on TV, was only briefly released on video in the US a couple of decades ago and for years was only on DVD in Spain. Yet while it's not a great picture by any means, it certainly doesn't deserve its current obscurity.

It's certainly somewhat disingenuous about Italy's role in the war. If you were to go by the film, far from being an enthusiastic fascist ally of Hitler, Italy is treated as if it were occupied territory under the heels of the tyrannical Nazis waiting for the Allies to liberate it. There's not a blackshirt in sight, but plenty of Nazi unpleasantness - the film begins with the Germans massacring the inhabitants of one small village while the ineffectual partisans watch without making a move to stop it. The business of revenge instead falls to the villagers' children, who form their own feral band and strike it lucky when they rescue demolitions expert Rock Hudson, sporting a `tache Sonny Bono or a Turkish strongman would envy, after the rest of his team are all killed. The children regard him as their property and expect him to repay them by killing Jean Servais' local SS commander, while he wants them to help him complete his mission to destroy a vital dam, but not before much arguing with their obnoxious and increasingly unbalanced leader Mark Colleano while Sergio Fantoni's bottle-blonde German tries to stop this bunch of angels with dirty semi-automatics...

Rather than an Italian Ivan's Childhood, this is more a men on a mission movie - or rather, a boys on a mission movie - with occasional hints of Lord of the Flies as the boys do all the things you might expect when parental supervision is replaced by access to machine guns: plan to kill everyone in sight, threaten to have their way with women and try to force the grownups to play by their rules. The moral considerations aren't entirely overlooked (the ending is surprisingly bleak despite the light bodycount) but it's primarily a boys own adventure story: Sylva Koscina's just there to tend the wounds, be threatened with a fate worse than death or be argued over. There's not a lot of action, but what there is is well-staged, while Ennio Morricone provides an excellent score with an infectiously catchy main theme.

Previously long unavailable aside from a surprisingly good Spanish DVD, it's since been released on DVD in the UK, as a manufactured on demand DVD-R in the US and on Blu-ray (with original trailer) in Germany, the latter with the brightness boosted somewhat. If you can find it at a reasonable price it's certainly worth a look.

3.0 out of 5 stars More a War of the Flies than a Hornets nest., 29 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Curious Spaghetti war film, with Rock Hudson appearing, like he did in Macmillan & Wife. Taking on the German war machine, in Italy, during the 1940's.
The movie plays out like William Golding's Lord of the Flies, with a dash of Whistle down the Wind. Rock Hudson looking like he'd stepped out of a 1970's National Guard recruiting commercial, reluctantly joins forces with some thoroughly disenchanted kids, who between them, then decide to destroy a key dam & flood the diabolical German force. All of which are causing mayhem in the Italian countryside.
This is a slice of 1970's war films, wrong hair cuts, lack of military historical detail, all the stuff which makes these films strangely enjoyable.
Along came 'Saving Private Ryan', & these movies look like old westerns in the face of gritty realism.
Still an enjoyable slice of nostalgia from a rarely seen oddity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good fun, great music., 19 Aug. 2014

As a fan of Ennio Morricone I had to add this to my collection. Fairly typical of the genre, with one or two surprisingly tough scenes, this is good all round entertainment provided you turn a blind eye to one or two cheap effects.
