5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 6 May 2014
This review is from: TOUMANI & SIDIKI (Audio CD)
I don't ordinarily write reviews but since this hasn't got any at the time of writing, I felt I'd offer up my thoughts.

This morning, I'd never heard of Toumani & Sidiki but wandered into a record shop in Manchester - killing time before my train home - and was taken by the tune coming across the speakers. Asking the staff member who it was, revealed that the record in question was this one as it's just been released. He went on to recommend listening in stereo for a number of reasons listed below.

Toumani Diabaté is the finest Kora player in the world (his musical lineage dates back through 700 years and his own father was a world famous Kora player before his death) and here, he plays with his son, Sidiki, whom is more commonly known in Africa as a one half of a hip-hop duo. Sidiki is very much a 21st century Kora player though obviously influenced by his more traditional father and even more traditional grandfather. This is their first album together - Toumani played with his father at the Royal Albert Hall in 1987 - and through stereo speakers, you can hear the styles of father and son with one speaker for each.

The music itself is a harmonious joy, although tracks do tend to sound similar. For me, this isn't a problem as the Kora is a beautiful instrument to listen to. If you don't like one track, I feel it's highly likely you won't like them all and vice versa. It's gorgeous, dreamlike background music with my personal favourite being 'Dr Cheikh Modibo Diarra', presumably because that was what was playing when I asked the assistant for help. A fantastic record that I will have on repeat throughout the summer. Check out the tracks below before buying to see if it's your thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Father and son, 10 May 2014
This review is from: TOUMANI & SIDIKI (Audio CD)
Instrumental kora music from Mali. Father and son playing some classics with one new song 'Lampedusa'. You'll recognise some of the tracks if you are familiar with Malian music but the interpretations here are their own.
Coming from such a rich and long musical tradition this album is a real pleasure to hear.
It's fascinating to hear the different approaches to playing. The son, Sidiki, often takes the more active role with fast fingered flourishes.
They are touring at the moment so It'll be a treat to hear them live.
This isn't Toumani's best album, check out the astonishing solo release The Mande Variations.
The CD has great packaging with suitably arty photos and design and rather pompous sleeve notes by producer Lucy Duran.

with the panning from left to right this was one of the best albums i've bought in a year, also look at Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita for a joint favourite

5.0 out of 5 stars Relaxing Kora Music from Mali, 23 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: TOUMANI & SIDIKI (Audio CD)
I don't understand why it should be, but Mailan music and the Kora seems to suit my westernised ears. This CD is not quite up to the Heart of the Moon CD by Toumani and Ali Farka Toure, but it's still a very relaxing collection of tunes, with fascinating dexterous exchanges between the two players. I'd love to know how the Kora works!
