This truly is an album that is the sum of its parts, and though Jacob Young is an undoubtedly fine guitarist with innovative and thoughtful ideas the backing musicians are the key to why it's (in my view) so successful. It also helps that the recording quality is of the high standard that ECM seems so consistently capable of producing. Marcin Wasilewski is a fantastic pianist but here he melds his creative talent around the rest of the group to great effect. Trygve Seim, whom in the past I've sometimes thought of as being a rather austere stylist provides some excellent support. The rhythm section provide more than a solid base for the soloists by contributing to every track in appropriate ways. This is an album for sitting down and listening to rather than thinking "aural wallpaper"; there are so many high spots. At the time of reviewing "Bounce" ( a misnomer perhaps?) "Sofia's Dance" and "1970" are the stand out tracks, but I've no doubt that further listening will provide alternatives to those. If you think this review is hyperbole try listening to just one of those tracks mentioned. For me, one of the best jazz releases of 2014 and highly recommended as an example of where European Jazz is heading.

5.0 out of 5 stars No doubt about it - this is a gem!, 21 May 2014

What a treat this album is. I'd been looking forward to it, having thoroughly enjoyed Sideways and Evening Falls, but this session sees Jacob Young really come into his own. Bringing in the Marcin Wasilewski Trio was undoubtedly an inspired move - they cradle and lift Trygve Seim into what is surely one of his best performances to date. And Jacob simply shines as a bandleader. Great compositions, lyrical melodies and exceptional interplay and togetherness from a band that have undoubtedly produced one of the top jazz albums of 2014

An absolutely lovely ensemble album. There's not a harsh note, no showboating, hardly a solo, just great musicians playing together.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Quiet Storm, 6 Nov. 2014
This review is from: Forever Young (Audio CD)
The choice of the cover photograph shows real wit -- the quiet storm, indeed -- but this is no smooth jazz album. It's Jacob Young's idea of what a smooth jazz album should sound like: relaxed, melodically gorgeous, but as demanding as any other, thornier, kind of jazz.

Young's music is upbeat, tuneful, and shamelessly romantic, the immaculately-picked notes on his arsenal of guitars evoking soft rock ("We Were Dancing"), flamenco ("Sofia's Dance"), and east/west fusion ("1970") as well as late night balladry. Rhythmically, Young isn't a hard-swinging guitarist, and sometimes, as on "Comeback Girl" and "Beauty," he declines to play a solo at all, leaving that to Seim and Wasilewski. Young wrote all the tunes, and there isn't a weak composition among them, though the album title did get my hopes up for a Bob Dylan cover.

Saxophonist Trygve Seim seems incapable of playing an ugly note. His economical solos favor long, bent notes and a breathy melodicism that can be downright sexy, but just as you think you've got him pegged, listen to him skirt the edge of free jazz (in "Beauty") with the precision of a competitive skater. Marcin Wasilewski and his trio are a first class rhythm section for Young and Seim, and masters of a breathtakingly beautiful piano trio sound in their own right. They're perfect in this music, as they are in every other recording they've made, and it's easy to hear why they're among ECM's star attractions now.

Excellent music, but there is more emphasis on the Saxophone playing than on the guitar.
