WOW what an album! Most readers will know that this series of "Road Shows" albums are compilations of tracks hand chosen by Sonny himself. The six tunes on this latest volume cover live performances from the early years of the new millennium 2001 - 2012. Born 1930 one can easily see that this covers his ages 71 - 82. That realised the performances gain even greater status; the power of his playing has not declined, the tone may not be quite there, but pretty impressive still; the endurance remains with his extended solos (some exceeding ten minutes) and inventiveness remains as shown by the eight minute solo "Solo Sonny" which is "a capella" and it is a game of "spot the quotes"(I'm sure I have missed lots!).
Obviously a Sonny Rollins showcase, the supporting musicians are far more than make-weights. Bob Cranshaw (b) and Clifton Anderson (tmb) feature throughout. By the eay the selection is from five concerts (2001, '06, '07, '09 and two from '12). Only one track has a pianist (Stephen Scott) otherwise there is a guitar. Bobby Broom is on three tracks and Peter Bernstein on two (both excellent). Kobie Watkins (drums) is on three tracks; others feature Perry Wilson, Victor Lewis or Steve Jordan. All tracks also have a percussionist (either Kimati Dinizulu or Sammy Figueroa).
But the star is,of course, Rollins. The tracks vary in length from 4.22 to 23.39, giving around 70 minutes of intensive concert jazz! The audiences loved it, and so will you!
