A Personal Perspective.....
on 22 April 2014
I confess to pre-ordering this for purely personal reasons. Way back more years than I sometimes care to remember I was around when some of these tracks were made. I had a long friendship, 40 years plus, with Dave Dee (r.i.p. mate). Steve Rowland produced D.D.B.M. & T (amongst many others, The Herd etc). He was and im sure still is a talented man. As RPM have done their usual excellent job of providing extensive sleeve notes i'll leave it to you history wise to absorb. I guess there are two reasons why you might purchase this cd. Firstly, arguably to get a decent recording of 'Way of Life' Family Dogg cd's have been as rare as hens teeth and bloody expensive. Secondly completists (or anoraks like me!) will know that the mix of talent surrounding FD is amazing. Albert Hammond, Mike Hazlewood and 3/4 of a little fledgling band who morphed into Led Zeppelin! However don't expect to hear the roots of LZ, John Paul Jones was an in demand session arranger, John Bonham and in demand session drummer and Jimmy Page...well Jimmy was everywhere in those days and has probably long forgotten just how many records he contributed to (that's him on The Who's I Cant Explain for example). Anyway whatever your reason for purchasing this 2cd anthology there is much to enjoy, and to be fair some throw away fluff. FD's cover of Rare Birds Sympathy is excellent for example, their cover of Elvis's In The Ghetto is not. 50 odd tracks at this price is however wonderful value. I don't intend to critique the whole body of work here. I believe people should make up their own minds and as aforementioned I guess this is a wallow in nostalgia for me on so many levels. Thank you RPM for making this available to everyone and whatever you're doing now Steve, God Bless you for the music.
