Since I first saw these movies as a child, my love of Vincent Price and the Dr Phibes films have never waned.
At last those wonderful people at Arrow have issued a limited release (3,000) box set that not only incorporates both Phibes films with a clutch of extras but also a superb 100 page book to accompany the Phibes phenomena.
A shame that no deleted scenes or such-like was either found or indeed around for inclusion but the quality of the movies on Blu-ray are superb, at times so sharp it belies the age of the movies themselves.
Along with Theatre of Blood and Madhouse, the Phibes movies are important for anyone who was interested in Price's career as they represent a clutch of fine English output with Vincent in the early seventies. Arrow have given us Theatre of Blood and now the Phibes box set, please let's have a similar issue for Madhouse to complete that Price (ly) period of Vincent.

ARROW BLU RAY RELEASE: Two decent horror films. Arrow's visual quality was not bad but certainly not as good as it could have been. I have played blu rays of films of this age and earlier that have boasted far superior picture quality. Network's releases of The Professional television series (shot on 16mm film) proves the point as to what is achievable. Vincent Price's camp, over the top acting yet with credible pathos suits the subject matter to perfection and he bolsters both films as the insane disfigured lonely man who yearns to be re-united with his gorgeous wife. Good escapist entertainment.

A near simultaneous re-release along side the brilliant Theatre of Blood ,the first and by far the best this a superb camp classic revenge with a theme,I only wish Arrow had released a double with the first Phibes and Theatre of Blood, they have far more in common with the miss firing Phibes cash in that could have been stuck on the bonus disc and some more extras than we get.Theatre of Blood and this are 5 star classics oft mentioned in the same highly regarded breath and would have made for a fantastic double bill, but we do get a beautiful box with with a 96 page illustrated booklet on the two"Phibes"outings that slot inside a smaller box along with both the original"Abominable Dr Phibes" Blu Ray and the one watch"Rides Again"which gives us an all time classic and superb approach to colour&lighting&set design that has shades of the Godfather of Italian horror Maro Bava and even Argento with the bizarre paper machet Clockwork band that are there for no reason other than they look weird,no explanation,no words...just play there instruments when given the nod, this may sound a load of disjointed, even confusing but it is a simple comedy horror that works, looks great and is so simple to follow despite the strange, ilogical goings on.The presentation is beautiful but we then get to the the Blu Ray of the the second film, the picture and sound are more VHS than Blu Ray but maybe that was partly because I began to grow weary and began spending time checking to see if certain certwith how inferior it was compared with the original in all it's illogically silliness, the plot is absurd but with Vincent Price in a role only he could have pulled off,it's fantastic. Both films are nonsense of coarse but the original is such good fun and simple where the actuals sequel is plodding, confusing, drag of film.It's.still a great package, pity you have to buy Theatre of Blood seperate because if you like this you're not gonna waste much time before you order Theatre of Blood which Arrow have re-released,and see Vincent chewing the scenery like a woodchuck on cocaine as he actually gets to play a bitter, unhinged ham actor with no vocal inhibition, again a theme related revenge flick. It would have been a superb double feature which would have plenty of disc space to encompass "Rides Again" and all the extras would have made for an amazing release,still,5 stars for the restored original gem and the elegant cardboard packaging with the booklet tucked in with the discs in slim booklet with illustrated covers, and tbh I'd probably recommend just buying the single Abominable Dr Phibes and bagging a copy of Theatre of Blood,a much better double bill but am not gonna knock any points off on account of it's having the plodding sequel,I'm sure many would agree that a release using Phibes one with theatre of Blood as an unofficial follow on,that would have made a coveted collection for these films many fans of both these

I have to say from the start that the content of the first movie in my opinion echos that of Theatre of Blood, but that apart it is a brilliant movie, and some of the ways Vincent Price despatches his victims has to been seen to be believed. The first movie follows Vincent Price as Phibes in his endevour to liquidate the surgeons he holds responsable for the death of his beloved wife. An enjoyable movie on any level. The second of the two movies covers Dr. Phibes quest to find the river of life before his rival. In my opinion not quite as good as the original, then sequels rarely are but very enjoyable just the same. I would recommend this set to any and all Vincent Price fans and anyone else who enjoys black comedies.

I think that when buying a blu ray, particularly of an old film, some peoples expectations are at times too high.
Just because the film is remastered into hd it does not necessarily equate to a stunning pin sharp image.Consideration has to be shown as to HOW the film was shot, camera,s used etc.
Phibes was low budget and as a consequence will appear to have had no great treatment for hd.However this release is the best possible imageyou will get and is better than any pprevious dvd releases. So to my mind well worth the upgrade for a camp horror classic.
Lets face it,anything with Price in it is worth watching.
Decent bonus materials also.

This treasured gem of a movie and it's sequel have been lovingly restored and presented on blu-ray. And what a delight it is. If you love the retro horror films of the 50's, 60's and 70's you will love this. Vincent Price was a major Horror star for over 30 years. So many of his films are classics of the genre. These two feature great supporting and cameo performances from other great actors and actresses. The packaging is great also. Even two commentaries for the first film. One featuring the 'League Of Gentlemen'.

The box set is very well presented but what happened to the quality control on the booklet? Overall looks great but the double page spread of nearly all the photos has the main facial image in the middle of the booklet so means that the composure of the photo is totally ruined. I only mention this because it is a collectors box set and my comment should be seen as constructive feedback. Other than this Arrow are still the best at what they do, offering fans titles in the UK with great extras.

One great movie, one not so great. However, the horror fans love this sort of collection and are glad that Arrow (who seem to be more highly regarded as the years go by) keep releasing them. Long may they continue. I only wish I had more money, so I could buy all the Vincent Price titles. Good packaging, spoiled only by poor design and placement of photographs in the booklet, making them hard to appreciate.

It's a classic two-film trip for fans - especially if you saw the films in their original release age - half the attraction of the story is in the comedy touches and the over-the-top art and design. Not a modern day shocker but of an age where costume and sets set the scene as much as the acting - no computer graphics but real physical sets - with the odd in-camera affect.
