5.0 out of 5 stars A need for balance, 19 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lights Out: Islam, Free Speech And The Twilight of the West (Kindle Edition)
Most of us are limited to thinking the unsayable (that we're worried about what's happening) whereas Steyn and his publisher have had courage in saying the unthinkable (that we're sleepwalking into a disaster). You don't have to like everything Mark Steyn writes to see how important that is. The inappropriate application of Human Rights legislation in the UK has undermined public confidence in its founding principles, and it sounds as though these Canadian authorities are in danger of doing the same. Reaching any considered judgement requires balance, and we certainly need something weighty to balance the PC output of much of our media's coverage of the effect of Islam on Western society and values. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mark Steyn at his best, 10 Mar 2014

Effectively this is the story of Mark's successful campaign against the Canadian Human Rights gang. If you know Mark's writing then you'll know what to expect and you won't be disappointed as he takes up the cudgels against the Orwellian thought police.
Of you haven't met him before then you're in for a treat.
If you believed in genuine free speech then you'll be grateful there are such defenders willing to put themselves on the line for the betterment of us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A romp through the insanity of assumed guilt, 8 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lights Out: Islam, Free Speech And The Twilight of the West (Kindle Edition)
Mark Steyn shows in great detail, through his contemporaneous record of allegations against him, the idiocy of bad legislation and a malformed legal system. He details the incompetence of the accusers, but more tellingly, he reveals the impact of an activist pseudo-judiciary making arguments from authority rather than law. This deserves to be read, and readers will be well rewarded with wit and intelligent argument.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Hail to the Chief!!, 19 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lights Out: Islam, Free Speech And The Twilight of the West (Kindle Edition)
If you like 1984, Brave New World, etc…. - this is the real deal - one man (and his publisher) takes on 1.Big Money Government 2.Biggest of the Big Lawyers representing The 'Law' , 3. Islam on a charge that had a historical 100% conviction rate.

What happened? THEY claimed he did crime - HE scattered them like a line of suckers.

it's funnier than the Mighty Boosh and worth a read if you want to laugh and be cheered up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and witty defence of freedom of speech, 5 Mar 2014

Steyn has a gift for making fools of his opponents with his sharp wit.
This is an important book in the defence of one of our fundamental freedoms - free speech - which is under threat from, astonishingly, those who purport to be defending human rights.

Marks battle is our - humanity's - battle against superstition and prejudice: open criticism is vital to democracy and freedom and the attempt by muslims and others to halt this must be battled - as usual Mark is very witty, too!

An amazing mix of hilarious yet profound. Serious subjects tackled seriously, but without ever losing sight of the best weapon against tyrannical ideologies: humour.

Where would we be without the likes of Mark Steyn, a real modern day hero of which unfortunately there are far too few. A true champion of the people though probably many have not heard of him so cannot appreciate the great service he has done for us all. Told here in his book - Lights Out and his battle against the scary Canadian so called human rights thought police. Essential reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lights out, 19 Jun 2014

An interesting read that encourages you to think carefully about what Steyn is saying. I consider his concerns go for all religions or groups that attempt to stifle or control free speach. Transparency is essential for all to expose those that wish to control the agenda to their advantage. Overall, a good read that broadened my understanding but I continually reminded myself there is always two sides ( or more) to a story. Highly recommended.

Author's woes about being attacked by various Islamic organisations in Canada. Makes very good points about the nature of free speech, which we need to have.
